Dr. Mehmet Oz is a Vice-Chair and Professor of Surgery at Columbia University along with holding the title of director of the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at NY Presbyterian Hospital. However, his practical approach to diet and health shot him to stardom when he appeared as a regular guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Today, Dr. Oz hosts his own show called the Doctor Oz Show.
You On a Diet or Dr. Oz 10 Day Diet
The talk around the Internet about the Dr. Oz 10 Day Diet is another example of how wishful thinking can spearhead a trend that leads to misinformation. If you've watched Dr. Oz on television or read any of his books, you know that his approach to diet is not a quick fix or fad approach. His new diet called You On a Diet claims you may drop a dress size in 10 days, but it not a 10 day diet! It's a healthy lifestyle approach to eating which recommends the elimination of unhealthy foods including hydrogenated oil, sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and enriched and bleached flours.

Along with healthy eating, Dr. Oz offers tips in his book to keep people motivated while trying to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Here are a few of them:
- Walk 30 minutes daily: Dr. Oz talks about making exercise part of your life by doing things like parking your car further from the door of the store to encourage walking. While watching television, stay active on a stationary bike. The key is to fit exercise in as part of life, not something additional to add to an already busy schedule.
- Remove temptation: Once you've made up your mind to get healthy and in shape, get rid of the potential pitfalls. There's no sense in sabotaging your efforts by keeping "forbidden foods" on hand. Take time to go through your refrigerator and pantry and get rid of anything that doesn't belong on your diet. Check the labels for the five things you want to eliminate. Don't fall for the excuse that you'll keep it on hand for the family. They don't need it either.
- Be a wise shopper: Part of losing weight on the Dr. Oz. Diet is learning to be a wise shopper. This not only includes watching out for the foods you're not supposed to it, but also by learning to buy whole foods. This includes things such as whole-grain breads and vegetables.
- Eat healthy fats: Dr. Oz does not tell you to cut all fat from your diet because our bodies need fat to activate hormones. His suggestion is to eat a small amount of healthy fats before meals. This way your brain will be tricked into thinking you've eaten. An example of a healthy fat is nuts. Just remember that he suggests a small amount!
- Include fiber: Another important element in staying satisfied is to include fiber in your diet. It not only keeps you feeling fuller longer, but it also slows the digestive process which helps keep your blood sugar levels balanced.
The good thing about Dr. Oz's approach to health and weight loss is that it is practical. If you're looking for a plan to help you lose weight, the down-to-earth approach to eating right found in the pages of his book not only help you know how to eat, but why you should eat that way. Knowing the why behind the how is sometimes just the incentive we need to stay on the right path.
