Anand: I'm sharing with you what I did to lose weight & (am too an overweight vegan on my way down, finally). First, I stopped all refined products, stuck with mostly fruits & veggies & really cut down on my carbs (grains - bread - didn't realize how many grains I was consuming) & eat more plant-based protein (hummus, beans, tofu & even add some olive oil to my hummus & toast slices). I wasn't able to exercise due to body stiffness & still lost 30 pounds (20 in one month & did not go hungry)! My exercise is getting on track again (walking & strengthening exercises) though. Also, my breakfast is the largest meal of my day at 8 a.m. every morning with lunch second (5-6 hours later), and normally no supper unless I'm really hungry, & that I eat b/t 5 & 6 p.m. And it is fruit or a smoothie -- something light or I drink 7 oz of grape juice, 3 oz of water, & 4 T. ground flaxseed in place of supper if I'm a little hungry (this helps my body with its inflammation). It is filling & delicious! I do not snack between meals & feel absolutely wonderful. I also eat raw nuts at my meals (6 whole). I have followed the information I learned from Barbara O'Neil who runs Misty Mountain Health Retreat in Australia (which is much of the above) & cannot tell you how much better I feel!

Hi Anand,

Some people think that eating Vegan will clearly help them lose weight. It can, but it still depends on the amount of calories you're eating. Indian foods are often high in oil which really packs the calories in.

Try to limit:

  • sugar
  • salt
  • oils

This will help bring your calorie count down. The key is to burn more calories than you eat if you want to lose weight.

I have been a vegan all my life. I am 33. I have milk very very rarely - when I can't get black tea.

Here is the problem - I am grossly overweight! I love Indian veg food, and choice and variety are never a problem. I have stopped white rice and only eat red rice and hand pound the wheat myself for bread. Still 33Kilos overweight.

Man - some people like me a are just born fat.
