Hi Amanda,

I would suggest you talk with your health care provider to ask for his dietary recommendation because he will understand your medical history and know exactly what is best for your situation.

Hello,

I would love to get a diet that would help me. I have thyroid problems and heart problems, so I would need a diet that could help in both and not affect one of my problems.

Hi Pallavi

Your doctor is the one who will best know whether or not you need medication to help your condition. Other than that, following the diet outlined in this article should help. Let me know how it goes.

Hi Christine,

Levothyroxine is often used to help treat thyroid problems. Other drugs can affect it's effectiveness and it should not be used by people who have had a heart attack, a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis, or an uncontrolled adrenal gland problem. It should be okay but be sure to stay in touch with your doctor as he knows your medical history.

Hi Yvonne,

With your symptoms I would suggest you talk with your doctor to be sure there are no other health conditions that must be addressed. He can also design a diet specifically for your needs.

Hi Denisse,

The key is to find the right medication to get your thyroid regulated. Perhaps you need to check with a second doctor to see if you get better results. In the meantime, adjust your diet the best you can. Let us know how it goes.

Hi Elaine,

With so many health issues and medications, it is best to talk with your doctor about what diet you should follow. You don't want it to be a fad, but a healthy diet that will allow for steady weight loss. Let us know how it goes.

This is a new situation for me. After failing to lose weight trying different diets and using "diet pills", (I even joined Curves), I have learned that my thyroid doesn't function. I am on medication now for thyroid, cholesterol and high blood pressure. I am finding it hard to determine what I can have as a diet because of the combination of the three issues. How do I do this and restore my health and lose weight. I need to lose at least 100 pounds to be at a good weight. Can anyone give me some sound advice and a diet that makes sense?

Hi Asiya,

These foods depress thyroid activity and should be included in the diet for hyperthyroid conditions and avoided for hypothyroid conditions.

how can cauliflower and broccoli help in hyper thyroid they belong to brassica family and need to be avoided...could you please clear it out.

Hi Jean,

If you thyroid gland is gone, you have no endogenous source of thyroid hormone which helps regulate the basal metabolic rate (BMR). This is the rate at which our bodies expend calories while at rest. I'm assuming you're taking thyroid hormone replacement medication, right? You need to work with your doctor to find the appropriate dose as this can play a role in your weight loss efforts. Once your thyroid hormone level is stabilized within the normal range you should be able to lose weight by following a healthy diet and exercising.

Hi,

I had my thyroid and goiter taken out on August 26 this year. Was wondering what would you suggest to lose weight? I need some serious help. The doctor saved the calcium glands. Help me please!

Hi Stephanie,

You've got a lot of different factors here that can affect weight. The thyroid gland plays a big role in regulating your weight. If a person has a thyroid that doesn't produce a sufficient amount of thyroid hormone, they gain weight, and when the thyroid is removed you'll experience that same problem. The reason this happens is that the thyroid hormone helps to regulate the BMR (basal metabolic rate). If your BMR is high you burn calories faster. You may want to talk with your doctor about the dosage of your thyroid hormone replacement medication to see if that can help with your weight. Finding the right dose often takes some tweaking. This can be done with a simple blood test to check levels of thyroid hormone in your system.

Along with this, you'll have to make changes to your eating habits. This isn't a diet, but a real lifestyle change. It will require diet and exercise.

Hi, I was wondering if these suggestion are good for someone without a thyroid? I have no thyroid due to a total thyroid ectomy and I need some help with weight issues. My doctors think that everything is okay, when before I had my thyroid removed my weight was a steady 148 to 150. Now I have gained 40 to 45 lbs on that. I am 5' 9" and need to lose the weight but no one will give me any help. I am really self conscious and swollen every morning. My hair is falling out again, skin is dry and I am always hot even when it is cold outside. I take synthroid .175 mcgs along with zoloft 100 mgs. My psychiatrist had me on Topamax, I lost a lot of my weight, TOO MUCH, and had pancreatic problems as well. I got taken off of that and started gaining all the weight back. I would love any help that anyone could give me. Thanks ~Steph~

Hi Daniell,

It's best to follow your doctor's recommendation as they know your medical history. You're commitment to exercise and healthy eating will put you on the road to better health.

I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and I have a goiter. I'm trying to find the right diet for me to lose 20-25 pounds. I do exercise at least 3 times a week and I know walking is the best way. I'm trying to see if this diet would be better for me than the Sacred Heart Diet that I am currently on.

Hi Rose,

With your husband's unique medical needs it is best to check with your health care provider for dietary recommendations. He did give you the low-cholesterol diet to follow, but I suggest you voice your concerns and see what he says.

-- Contributed by: Donna Sundblad

My husband was diagnosed with low thyroid, gout, & high cholesterol. I don't know which diet to follow. The foods that are listed as good for gout are not good for low thyroid. What should I do? I think that if I get the low thyroid diet down, it will take care of gout, is that true? I'm confused as to what to do.Today, I gave him organic turkey salad with oranges, grapes, apples, celery, strawberries, saff-flower mayo. Then I find out that some of these are not good for the thyroid. I am terrified. His thyroid is at a critical high of 49.5. His gout is high and his uric acid is at 9. What do I do? I was following the diet that the Dr. gave me for low-cholesteral. His cholestoral trycl. is at 230. hdl at 35, ldl at 78.

Hi Tonya,

It is best to ask your doctor this question. When thyroid levels get too high fatigue can be a side effect and your dosage may need to be adjusted. For some people with hypothyroid, even after levels become normal this fatigue doesn't go away. Some doctors say HRT can help. Another important thing is make sure you get enough sleep, something this simple is often overlooked.
