Cara,

Motivation to lose weight successfully needs to come from within you. No matter how much others want us to lose weight, if we're not ready to buckle down and take the steps to achieve that goal, we won't do it.

Maybe find a friend who also wants to lose weight and have a contest between the two of you.

Hi Jade,

Well you've identified the problems. Really being overweight is a symptom of your inactive lifestyle. Here are a couple more articles to help give you some ideas:

I'm fat and lazy and don't like to eat apples!!

Pleaseee help me.

Hi Reba,

I'm not sure what you weigh, but it sounds like your eating enough calories to maintain your weight. This means your burning what you're eating. To lose weight, you'll have to eat less calories or exercise more to use more of the calories you're taking in.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Okay so here is the deal everyone thinks I'm a normal weight, but I know I'm overweight. I have been exercising, eating healthy, cutting out sugary treats and avoiding fatty foods but all I can do is maintain my weight now, I cant lose any weight. HELP!!

I know I am overweight. Ok, 70lbs. over. Everyone tells me I look fantastic but how can I belive them when I know the truth? I am planning to have my wedding in 4-5 years and most companys charge up to $400 extra for my dream wedding gown. I come from a long line of obese people, I want that to change.

-- Contributed by: Tara

Hi Jessica,

You can't determine whether or not you are overweight based on what a few people say or even how you feel. Our Western world media tends to focus on our obesity problems, and sometimes teens who are at a healthy weight may develop a distorted body image. I suggest you check with your doctor to see what he or she has to say. They tell you the truth based on the facts.

Okay, I think I'm fat and everybody tells me I'm not, except my friends. And I am kind of pudgy, but I don't know what to do? Can you help me?

Hi Lola,

You sound like you're trying to convince someone of something. If a shirt makes you "look a little fat" then I'd suggest not wearing it, or buying a larger size. OR get out and exercise regularly so the shirt looks just the way you want it to. HOT!

Okay I'm not fat...now sometimes I wear shirts that make me look a little fat...but the shirts are so hot!

Hi Lissy,

Instead of looking for a diet, I would suggest a lifestyle change. This would include portion control which means learning to limit yourself to sensible portions and wiser food selections. The key is to burn more calories than you eat if you want to lose weight. As for what exercise is best, you may want to talk to your doctor about that. He may have recommendations that are less likely to aggravate your asthma. The following links may help you to better understand what food are best for you:

Hi there, I'm 16 years old, Five foot six, and I weigh 195 pounds. I'd like to lose 30 pounds or more. I participate in sports at school and help coach a little league baseball team. But with the summer coming up I'll need to do more to lose weight at home. I really like to run but have low stamina and mild sports induced asthma. What can I do to lose those 30 pounds?

-- Contributed by: Lissy

Hi Tara,

The bottom line is that you must burn more calories than you take in if you want to lose weight. You're exercising regularly, and that is a plus. However, you might want to take a look at how many calories you're taking in. Sometimes when we eat healthy whole foods we eat more than we need because they are good for us.

To do this, keep a food diary for about three days or so. Then take time to look up how many calories are contained in that food. I don't know your age and that can make a difference in how many calories you need to maintain your weight. You'll want to eat less than that because you don't want to maintain--you want to lose.

If you feel you're eating fewer calories already, it's a good idea to talk with your doctor to see if there may be a medical reason behind your stubborn weight.

I am 5'4 and 180 lb. i run two miles every weekday and i do not eat junk food. what else could i possibly do to lose weight!?

-- Contributed by: Tara

Hi Paula,

I don't know how tall you are or what your ideal weight is, but if you want to lose weight these few changes should help:

  • Avoid sugary drinks and snacks
  • Don't eat seconds at your meals
  • Eat fruits and vegetables
  • Exercise at least 5 days a week for 30 minutes or more
  • Avoid fried foods

Good luck Paula, let us know if you have more questions.

-- Contributed by: Paula

Hi Not,

According to the Ideal Weight Calculator with your height of 5' 8" your ideal healthy weight is 147 pounds and your recommended weight range is between 131 and 164 pounds. Since you have the drive to get control of your weight, I suggest keeping healthy snacks and food on hand so when you have the urge to eat you make the best choices.

Im 14. I am 5'8 & a half. and im around 180 pounds. i have the urge to wanna try and lose weight but i also have the urge to eat everytime food is around. Do you think that i should be on a diet and have a healthier way of life? instead of my continuing plan?

Hi Trey,

Running is not for everyone. If your have trouble with your feet and ankles, you may want to try exercises like rowing that relies on the upper body. Or try cycling which takes the weight off your legs.

How long it will take to lose weight will depend on factors like how much you eat and how long you exercise. Weight loss comes from taking in less calories than you burn in a day.

I'm 15, 6'1, and I weigh 240 to 245 pounds. I actually like muscular exercises but I have trouble running cause I have a foot and ankle problem... I drink a lot of water. What can I do, and how long should it take for me to weigh 210.. thanks.

Hi Brittany,

I'm not sure what you weigh, but if you seriously think you need to lose weight and are eating healthy along with your active lifestyle, I would suggest talking with your doctor so he can run tests to see if there might be a medical reason behind the mystery.

-- Contributed by: Donna Sundblad

Hey, My name is Brittany and I think I have a weight loss problem. For years I have been involved with sports like volleyball and track and tennis and volleyball. I am also involved with JROTC at my high school. I am 15 and 5 foot, and I do eat healthy. So why can't I loss weight?

-- Contributed by: Brittany

Hi Amber,

You've identified your problem areas, and now what you want to do is make a plan to overcome them. For example, if you plan to graze--only graze on healthy low-fat foods. Prepare celery and carrots ahead of time so you've got something you can crunch. And just as important, make a plan to get out and move. Go to the mall and plan to walk around for 30 minutes before you can go into a store. Don't pick the closest parking place to the door when you go either. Walking is great exercise!

-- Contributed by: Donna Sundblad

Hi, I'm Amber and I weigh like 160. I am 15 years old and 5'4". I have trouble with grazing and junk food. I'm not all that active so I'm kinda stumped.

Hi Bailey,

The best thing you can do is have your mom make an appointment with your doctor to find the diet that is best for you. You can make some healthy changes on your own by eliminating junk foods and sugary drinks and eating more fruits and vegetable. Also, read the labels of the food you plan to eat and look to see how big one serving is. Many times we eat much more than that. This is a great time for you to learn healthy eating habits that will give you more energy and build a strong body.

Hi Renee,

You've take a big first step. You've admitted to yourself that you need to lose weight and you want to do it in a healthy way. Losing weight and keeping it off is a lifetime commitment, so it is important to stay away from fad diets. This is especially important at your age as you are still growing and fad diets can rob your body of iron, calcium and other essential nutrients your body needs. The best way to lose weight is slow and steady though changes that become habits for a lifetime.

Along with making changes in your eating another important factor to losing weight and keeping it off is exercise. Teens need about 60 minutes of physical activity a day. This doesn't have to be all at one time. You can break it up into three 20 minutes walks or two half hour slots of time. This helps in more than one way. First it burns calories taken in and secondly it burns stored body fat and builds muscle. Muscle will continue to burn calories for you.

As for what diet it follow, it's always good to check with your family doctor to get his recommendation not only for diet but also ask him what your ideal weight should be.

Here are a few tips to get you started in the meantime:

What to eliminate:

Fast food Junk food snacks Soda or sweetened drinks Limit sweets Fried foods

What to add:

Exercise Fruits and vegetables Whole grains Drink plenty of pure water

Hi my name is Renee and I am 16 years old I weigh around 260 pounds. I want to lose 100 pounds but don't know how to do it. Do you have any suggestions.

-- Contributed by: renee

Hi Anna,

At your age, your body is still growing. The best thing you can do is to switch out unhealthy snacks for healthy ones like fruit, whole-grain crackers, or baby carrots. These can be carried in your backpack so you always have healthy food nearby. Right now I suggest you focus on making better food choices and let your weight take care of itself.

-- Contributed by: Donna Sundblad

Hi, I'm Anna. I'm 11 years old, about 5'4 and 127 lbs. I'm not comfortable with my body shape, but I think just losing a little would make me happier. I would like to lose only 7 lbs, but I'm not sure my ability to stop eating junkfood will decrease. Can you tell me a healthy and smart way to lose weight?

-- Contributed by: Anna

Hi Nicole,

It's not about cutting junk food completely of your diet but learning to understand your relationship with food. Take a look at what a serving size it to help you see if you are overeating. If so, ask yourself why. Many people overeat to feel good, but the end result is that they are not happy with their body. The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens can help you make the best nutritional choices when you hang out at McDonalds or other fast food restaurants. The key is not totally abstaining from these foods but to make better choices and not to overeat.

I would recommend two things: Have your daughter read Jay's book and also discuss the problem with her doctor. There may be a health issue involved if she has a weight problem.

She also needs to understand that size does not determine beauty. Not fitting into a certain size does not make her less of a person. Help her to see that she is beautiful just being herself.

Thanks for your question. :)
