I share your concerns about aspartame. And when it comes to added fat, you really have to read labels to check what's in these products. I've known people to gain weight because they think sugar-free is fat-free and vice versa.
However, if a person is overweight, that too is a health risk and if they can get their weight under control by following a diet like this one, then it is up to them to weigh risk against risk and make a choice.
