Hi Heaven,

The fact that you admit you want to lose weight is the first step! The thing is that we are all unique and the same diet doesn't work for everyone...not that they couldn't but our personalities enter into the picture. The key to losing is to burn more calories than you eat. Exercise like walking helps and cutting back on portions helps. Cutting snacks and desserts helps. For some people counting calories let's them eat what they like within their caloric limits. Others choose a low carb plan. There are so many choices. You might want to check out the diet forums here and see if what others have to say. The link is in the left column of every page.

I need help i really want to loose 40lbs but im not sure what to do

Hi Rachel,

I'm with you on this, though years ago I did go the diet soda route. The more you read about artificial sweeteners, the more I've decided I'd rather just eat sugar when it is time to splurge.

Glad to see a diet that advocates drinking diet soda chalk full of harmful chemicals. Good job.

If you want to lose weight, eat clean (organic) and exercise. I'm down 41 lbs in just 3 months. I don't eat perfect all the time (ask the pizza I ate last week) but nine times out of ten does a body good!

Hi Barbara,

Rigid dieting sends many of us over the deep end because it is so restrictive that all we do is think about food. The Smash Diet is designed to help us break our old ways--physically and mentally, while teaching you how to eat. This might just be what you're looking for.

Let me know what you decide and if you try it.

HI I am reading up on the Smash Diet and it sounds like something I could do. i have tried w.w and it just allows too many choices and not enough control for me. I have tried a metabo diet and it works but after 2 or 3 weeks of rigid dieting, I am so hungry I lose control. I stay hungry on most diets. How likely is that to happen with the smash diet? Thanks for any input.

Hi Discouraged,

When you have a complete hysterectomy your body is forced into menopause and your hormone levels drop. The effects are different from one person to another, but one common complaint is weight gain (often around the midsection). This often occurs in older women, too, as they go through menopause and is related to the shift in hormone levels. If this is the reason for your weight gain, you probably want to talk to your doctor for his suggestions. Once you get hormone levels balanced, weight loss will be easier.

I have done Fat Smash before with great success. I recently had a hysterectomy (4 months ago) and this is the first time I've done it since. At day 10 I have lost nothing but I followed the plan precisely. I am discouraged because I know that it is something else that is keeping me from losing.

Oh I do with you luck, Barbie. You're doing all the right things. You'll have to let us know the results.

I am on day 8 of this fat smash diet. I found it very easy to do the first phase. I also have been walking 30 to 60 minutes a day also. By day three I felt that I was losing inches. A couple of people have said I look like I have lost weight already. Weigh in will be the 10th day. Wish me luck!

Hi Elizabeth,

You've got a goal! Good luck!

I am hoping to reach the goal by august. Wish me good luck

Hi Julia,

Do you just feel fatter or are you experiencing bloating or perhaps water retention? Not everyone loses weight the same way. When I've gone on detox diets, I've seen weight loss on day three, while others I know don't see anything for almost a week.

Other reasons for feeling fat include:

  • distress
  • negative emotions
  • internal and external body sensations
  • negative self beliefs
  • memories of feeling fat

If you have not strayed from your diet, rest in the fact that you are doing the right thing. If you have further questions, I suggest you talk to your doctor as he will be familiar with your medical history.

I am on day 5 and feeling fatter than ever. is this normal? Did you notice the weight loss right away?

Hi Megan,

Congratulations on your weight loss. That's great. Many people gain weight back after following a strict diet because it doesn't teach them to change their lifestyle eating habits. You're doing a great job. Stick with it!

I've been on WEIGHT WATCHERS for 7 weeks, and have taken off 17 lbs, in a slow and steady pace, I work out 4 days a week (cardio and free weights) I like this one because I could acutally love on this, and kinda of have my CAKE and eat it too, sweets are not off the table with this Points program, I wouldnt be able to maintain eating for life on SMASH, without my daily fix of sweets andd peanut butter, and a glass of wine a couple of time a week (4oz).

I want to encourage anyone who is thinking of doing smash the fat diet... Its an amazing program. I've been on smash the fat for six weeks and lost and total of 42lbs. Once you get pass phase 1 everything else is smooth sailing. GOOD LUCK!

Hi Jessica,

Legumes offer a great source of the nutrients important in preventing heart disease, cancer, obesity, and other chronic diseases and are a vegetarian source of protein for the diet. This diet tells you to eat until your satisfied so you can start with a serving which is 1/2 cup canned or cooked and 1/3 cup mashed.

-- Contributed by: Donna Sundblad

The legumes or beans do you need to measure or do you eat until satisfied? Also do you eat that all day when you're hungry or how does that work?

-- Contributed by: jessica

Hi Sara,

You can eat all the fruits and vegetables you want except white potatoes and avocados. The following foods are also allowed:

  • legumes/beans and tofu
  • 1 cup of oatmeal
  • 2 cups of brown rice
  • 2 cups lowfat or 1 percent milk
  • 2 6oz yogurts
  • 4 egg whites (eggbeaters)
  • Water
  • 2 cups of herbal tea
  • A very limited amount of olive oil dressing

Is it ok to eat sweet potatoes in phase 1?

Hi Barmom,

2 TBL of sunflower seeds counts as one of your snacks.

-- Contributed by: Donna Sundblad

Is it okay to eat sunflower seeds while on this diet. Trying to break the smoking habit and that's been my crutch.

Hi Holidays,

The science behind the Smash Diet does not leave room for deviation when in the early phases. The right foods are carefully chosen to be added to your diet at the right times. This is not only supposed to trigger what your next craving will be but the selected foods are there to satisfy it. The diet controls the intake of fatty foods to help eliminate cravings. What you really have to ask yourself is whether or not you want to be thin, or stuff yourself with holiday foods?

Does this diet allow for cheat days (Thanksgiving) or will I have to start Phase 1 over?

-- Contributed by: Holidays

Hi N. Fisher,

Experts weight in on both sides of this debate. Soy health claims are based on the FDA's determination that 25 grams of soy protein per day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease by reducing blood cholesterol levels. Recent studies show that consumption of soy protein compared to proteins like those from milk or meat, can lower total and LDL cholesterol levels. I suggest moderation. These claims are based on 25 grams per day of soy protein.

I am on day 6 of Phase 1. I don't really have any problems except for the concern of tofu being healthy for me. Can you please help ease my worries with some documented facts

-- Contributed by: N. Fisher

Today is day 6 for me. so far so good. I havent cheated. I want to so bad. Its easy when I go home but when I drive by fast food places i start to crave more food. BUt I am hanging in there.

-- Contributed by: Derrick Morrison

Sounds very good and i think i could be committed to this sort of diet. All of the allowed food are foods that i love and i dont mind eating more than usual. I guess this means food shopping! I need lots of fruits..I love them all..Vegies too.........COSTCOS here i come !....LOL!

Wow! I do like the diet, but I did have the caffeine headache the first day - Never realized how addicted to coffee/diet sodas I really was!

-- Contributed by: S

I did the diet and I lost 30 lbs! Yes, I did "cheat" a couple of times (I love chicken), but I made up for it with additional excercising. One thing I did notice is that my eating habits changed ALOT! By time I got to phase 4, food items that I use to crave tasted to salty (bacon, hamburgers, fries etc) or didn't sit well with me. This was a good thing. I plan to start the diet again to lose more weight!

-- Contributed by: Miss Li

I used Excedrin to wean myself off caffeine... started with two a day, then one a day, then one every other day... till I no longer got pounding headaches!

-- Contributed by: Misty Karam

i like this diet

-- Contributed by: Deirdre

I just started phase 1 and now on day 2 I have a SPLITTING headache from not drinking coffee, so i am breaking the rules and drinking about 1/2 a cup black and trying to wean off it. (i'm from seattle... nuff said?)

Does anyone know if boullion water is ok?
-- Contributed by: heather

I agree about the coffee! Phase 1 made me realize how easy it'd be to become a vegetarian—there are SO many yummy options out there! I LOVE fresh 'pico de gallo' (fresh salsa), so I make batch and spread over steamed or fresh veggies to kick-start flavor. Fresh basil and cilantro wake up any boring salad as well. I've done the Fat Smash Diet twice in the past 2 years. Initially, I lost 7 bls during Phase 1, then 20lbs. by Phase 3. At the moment I'm doing Phase 1 again, as maintenance, as I slipped a bit. My thanks to Dr. Smith—it's a great diet/book!

I'm on day 5 of this diet, and I feel great. Coffee was hard to give up at first, as were sweets, but now I don't miss either. I've lost 4 lbs. so far of just bloat weight and look forward to delving into my fat reserves any day now!

Even though the menu is limited, there are lots of nice ways to present your food that will keep you from being bored. I've shredded veggies and then served them in a red bell pepper. I've also made lots of beautiful omlettes. It's not really that bad of a diet. I can't wait until phase 2 so I can eat some avocado, though!

Hope this better describes the diet. Joann

Smash Fat Diet

-- Contributed by: Tina

Phase One: Detox The nine-day first phase of the diet is a time when you eat primarily fruits and vegetables, to allow your body to cleanse itself of impurities and toxins. The focus on raw or lightly cooked (steamed or grilled) vegetables and fruits also allows your body to make use of the abundant vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are present in these most natural of foods. During this phase, you establish the habit of eating four to five small meals daily at three-hour intervals. While the menu for meals is rather limited, there is no restriction on how much you eat -- though overeating is discouraged. A 20- to 25-minute walk after dinner (or some other light exercise) is recommended, or 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise five times per week..

Allowed Foods

all fruit all vegetables except white potatoes and avocadoes tofu dried beans (e.g., chickpeas, lentils) brown rice oatmeal limited skim or soy milk herbs and spices low-fat yogurt (no more than 12 oz. daily) up to 4 egg whites daily herbal tea unlimited water
