Hi eric,
I think many people follow their own form of the Atkins and then say it doesn't work. Congratulations on your weight loss and for continuing on a healthy path.

-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladYou really forgot to read up on the Atkins rules of the game. I did and lost 20 kg in 3 months, felt energetic and will never eat carb rich foods again.
-- Contributed by: eRICHi Todd,
Thanks for sharing your views. My daughter-in-law lost 50 pounds on the Atkins Diet and didn't experience any adverse effects.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladThis is useless. What you did isn't even close to the Atkins diet. You ate goat cheese and beef jerky for 3 days like a fool. This is as far off from the Atkins diet as you can possibly get, other than consisting solely off of white bread.
-- Contributed by: ToddHi Patti,
Every diet calls for some changes. Some are easier than others, but the key to successfully following a diet is mindset and choosing a diet that doesn't make you feel like you're being totally deprived. I think you found a happy medium with Atkins. My daughter-in-law lost 50 pounds following Atkins Diet plan.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI love this diet and am able to lose weight consistently with it. I was very surprised that my craving for sugar subsided immensely and I didn't miss the bread and sweets that I thought I would. I did miss my wine but not as much as I thought.

-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladMichelle- Based on the email above of jerkey and soy nuts--I suspect you were not consuming enough fat for your body to function correctly on this diet. I say correctly because on this diet, your body is living off the fat and protien you consume. Jerkey and soy nuts--whatever those are, while high in protien, have too little fat to help you feel satisfied and give you more energy. And further, they sound like snack foods, not meals. A small green salad, and perhaps a can of tuna and mayo or a store-bought roasted chicken (with the skin!) might have gotten you further. Also, pork rinds, make tasty crackers. And a cup of decafe with cream and sweetner or sugar free gelatan make a nice dessert. You will also find that your "sweet tooth" will subside with this diet as your insulin levels equialize. You can pick up most of the staples to last you a few days for under $25--especially if you shop at costco, samsclub or superwalmart.(just don't drop another hundred on all the other discount items in there!) Lastly, please let me urge you that while you seek a healthier lifesyle, you encourage your family to do the same... a diet of pizza, fries, and "nothing fresh" is not healthy by today's standards. A lifelong diet high in carbs, sugar, and saturated fats can lead to, among other things, obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Like any parent, i love my kid a lot and want her to live a healthy lifestyle. We eat a lot of fresh food and protien, keep the carbs to frut and grains and limit sugar. We have a treat night where she gets to have a happy meal or pizza. So, for us those foods are treats, not staples Good luck with your whatever program you choose and know you are taking a step in the right direction.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us. Please stay in touch and let us know how you progress. Do you have plans to help keep you from slipping this time around?
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Monica,
Thanks for stopping by to share your secret to staying thin here at LoveToKnow Diet.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI had great success with the Atkins diet. I was not hungry and the weight just kept coming off. However, after a few years I began slipping and put weight back on. Between that and getting older (it DOES make a difference, I swear!) I gained back everything I lost and a little more. But this IS a diet I can live with and I am back on it. I do tell others though, if you are a huge bread and pasta lover, you shouldn't even attempt it as you are doomed to fail. For me, that isn't an issue and once you are without sweets for a while the cravings really do go away. It is taking longer for the weight to come off this time but it is slowly coming off and I feel great!
-- Contributed by: MKozI'm from Brasil, and I just love this diet especially if I need to fit inside a dress for certain party's, and then after the party I lost what I want. That's why I'm never fat. I started and break as much as I want. Just love it.
-- Contributed by: monica oliveiraHi M,
That's why diets that establish lifestyle changes are successful. They help people to see that the foods they crave are the very things that end up making them miserable. It is a cycle in thinking that must be broken before a dieter can stay on their diet without feeling deprived.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladIf you're ready to commit to a lifestyle change I don't think that giving up cake and breads will be 'torment'. If it is, you're not ready. It's not about willpower, it's about being ready to change your body and your life for the better.
-- Contributed by: MHi Mody,
Thanks for taking the time to share your success with us. Do you plan to continue on this diet or have you lost all the weight you intended to lose?
-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladi have been on the atkins diet for three weeks and have lost 18 pound i feel some much better.
-- Contributed by: modyHi Syvlia,
Thanks for taking the time to share not only your success but your recipe. Sounds delicious!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI started the Atkins diet again. It was the best way for me to lose weight. I have been on it for a week so far and feel great. I love breakfast coffee, eggs and bacon (reasonable ammount), or I have low carb yogurt and berries. There is no reason to starve on this diet.
I just want to share with you a new quick easy recipe I thought up.
- 1 can of canned Chicken
- 1 egg
- 1tsp pepper
- 1 tsp garlic salt
- 1 tbls chopped onions
- 1 tsp chopped celery
Mix all together in a bowl and pan fry like a patty you can make two patties out of it Eat with avocado. The carbs on this are negligible.
and great tasting.... yumm
-- Contributed by: sylviaThe Atkins "Diet". Notice the quotations. The following comments and opinions are my personal experiences and thoughts. First off, was the diet a success or failure (in weight loss)? Definitely succes. I never lost so much weight so quickly ever before. Did I feel good during the process? Definitely not. Energy levels were all over the place; cravings were REALLY bad, to the point where I would chew something up to get the taste and spit it out (like oreo cookies). I know that's gross and it didn't happen often but you need a STRONG willpower for this diet in my opinion. Also, I was exercising alot during this diet. I was playing ball hockey in an arena (ice hockey rink without the ice) several times a week. This obviously enhanced the results. I lost over 30 pounds. I am about 5'11". I think I started at 210 lbs, and my lowest weight was 170-something. In my opening line, I put "quotations" around "diet" because I think you would be hard pressed to find a single person with an atkins-like LIFESTYLE. yes the diet worked, but I never did go into maintenance because I could never live like that, eating those foods forever. And of course, the weight comes back. The biggest problem for me is that I also do alot of social activities, for example, play darts twice a week, stop by the mess (bar) on Fridays with co-workers. The first 2 weeks of the diet, there is ZERO alcohol allowed. I found a spot on the calendar where that would work for me, so I did it successfully. Since the first time I did this diet, I tried it again, and failed. I felt really crappy, cravings were too intense, moody, cranky, etc. If you need to lose weight quickly for something, such as a wedding, or vacation, etc, and you stick to this program faithfully, and do aerobics or go to the gym, you should lose weight fast in the first few weeks. I don't recommend this for a lifestyle. Healthy eating habits and some exercise are all you need to maintain a good weight. there are lots of websites to help you with that. I hope this helped.
-- Contributed by: KevinHi Aaron,
The average weight loss for the first two weeks of following the Atkins diet is 15 pounds and you more than doubled that, so I think you might be right about the scales. But what matters is that you lost. Thanks for sharing your success.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI did the atkins for 2.5 weeks. Every third day however for dinner id have something less healthy but not junky. Usualy it was general tsao chicken. I am a 32 yo male and went from 230 to 197 in about 2.5 weeks. I dunno how i did it i think the scales were messed up. either way receipes are the best way to enjoy the diet for sure.
-- Contributed by: AaronMany dieters make their own beef jerky without nitrates or sugar. This would be a healthier option.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI can't imagine eating beef jerky all day long. So many nitrates. No wonder you didn't have any energy.
-- Contributed by: mjkHi Mr. B.,
If you look at this entire experience you'll note that at the end the author does recommend people considering the diet should buy "the tastiest vegetables, meats, and cheeses" and that they should have a source of support. These are keys in successful dieting. If the food doesn't taste good, most people over the long haul lose motivation to continue eating it. And not everyone needs support, but most people do. Otherwise, even after the weight is gone, it is easy to slip back into old eating habits, neglect exercise and find yourself back where you started or worse.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI'm surprised how negative some of the comments are. Maybe it's different for everybody. As for myself, I feel very high energy after three weeks so far on Atkins. One of my jobs playing music requires me to sing and dance for 3+ hours at a super-high energy level, and I feel so much better and more energetic. It does take some studying to understand the program, and I'm looking at this as a learning phase towards making permanent changes. I'll bet the people who complain about gaining the weight back either didn't exercise, or went back to eating french fries, donuts, ice cream, and food in portions too large. I look forward to adding more carbs back into my diet after I lose more weight, but making SMART food choices and eating small portions of the carbs that I used to love so much. You can find tasty, healthy foods and sauces with some effort. Much of the program is all about getting away from the sugar and processed grains. Instead of that few minutes of instant gratification from food, I'm enjoying the gratification of (pretty fast) weight loss... a joy that lasts around the clock. Think how much more energy we'll have carrying around less weight... hang in there!
-- Contributed by: Mr BI'm surprised that you felt low energy on the Aitkins diet. I felt terrible for a few days but the book tells you that is normal. But after that it was wonderful. I obsess over food and while on this diet...I wasn't hungry all the time like I was while overloading on carbs. My energy increased. I lost weight. Once in awhile I would get a "carb craving" but a small bowl of old fashioned oatmeal just slightly cooked in the microwave would taste heavenly and cure my craving. The hardest part of the diet was having to plan meals so carefully and in advance. I like to be able to grab something quick.
-- Contributed by: CDWhile you make some good points, you are overlooking a few things: 1. Only the induction period is very rigid. Other phases offer great variety and food choices. 2. Green veggies and increased water intake help with constipation. Dieters can also take fiber supplements. 3. Atkins is not supposed to be a short-term diet; it's intended as a way of eating for life. Of course you'll regain the weight if you go back to the foods that made you overweight to begin with! As you "climb the carb ladder" through the Atkins diet, you will add in healthy carbs such as vegetables and fruit, but you should never plan to add in sugar and white flour. 4. There are a variety of low carb specialty products available, including bread, tortillas, candy, and cake. New sugar substitutes, such as Splenda and Stevia, taste great and make low carb cooking easy. 5. It is true that the body uses carbs for energy, but, in the absence of carbs, you will enter ketosis and the body burns fat for energy. Many low carb dieters report feeling more energetic than ever after the first couple of days on the diet.
Hope this helps!
-- Contributed by: Misty KaramAtkins is good for someone who wants limited discipline. staying away from carbs but still eating that steak is very appealing. Here are the downs to it, carbs give you energy so guess how hard its going to be to make it thru the work week? Second, constipation like you wouldnt believe. I have never bonded with the bathroom like I did when I was on Atkins. Third, no matter how disciplined you are, your body is going to tell you that you NEED carbs. Suddenly, every thing WHITE turns undeniably attractive. Last, you WILL lose the weight. It will show and fairly quickly but guess what happens when you finally turn back into the beefcake/diva you had been in that dusty old HS yearbook? You will most likely eat carbs, thinking all is well and ten times faster than you lost the weight, you will GAIN IT ALL BACK becoming an all new fatter than ever version of your pre atkins self and stuck mourning the loss of your hard earned physique. My suggestion: Take a picture of yourself when you lose the weight because once you start eating carbs again, all you will have is the memories.
