Hi Reshma,
Many people follow the cleanse even when they have their period, but you need to listen to your body. If you've never tried this fast before, you may be more comfortable waiting until you are done with your period.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI started the cleanse yesterday and my period came I am wondering if I should continue or wait until it is over since I would be less weak? could you guys give me some feedback? I have been reading where people are saying when you have your period your body is detoxing so its a good time what do you think?
-- Contributed by: reshmaHi Tamara,
I have experienced that awful headache from caffeine withdrawal. I found drinking a half cup of coffee helped to relieve it and then I drank a little more later, but eventually could cut it out totally. Some people get a bad headache from sugar withdrawal. This is one of the reasons I wean myself from coffee and sugar before doing this cleanse.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI am on day three and I got the worst headache (migraine)on day two that still has not gone away. I am tempted to take a pain releaver, i don't see that anyone else has complained of this same side effect?
-- Contributed by: TamaraHi Bishop,
I would wean off the sleeping pills for sure, but before you stop any medication talk with your doctor.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI would like to start the cleanse, however, I am on medications. Should I get off them first? I am worried that they would affect me more strongly during the cleanse. they are anti depressants, and sleeping pills, and serequel. thanx for any input.
-- Contributed by: bishopHi Leah,
It sounds like you need more calories than the cleanse provides. How many glasses of the lemonade mixture were you drinking? They recommend six to eight.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladTried the cleanse, it makes me feel extremely weak! Any suggestions!
-- Contributed by: LEAHHi Margaret,
You make some good points. The first time I did the Master Cleanse, I followed it for seven days. While I saw minimal results, I did learn that I could do this cleanse without feeling deprived. When I did it for 21 days, I saw definite results and felt great.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladAs far as doing the diet a few days each month to maintain, it doesn't quite work like that. The first days clean out your colon, but it usually takes at least 5 days to get squeaky clean (if you have done the Master Cleanse, you will know what I am getting at). The Master Cleanse is designed to clean out all of your body systems. The 10-day cleanse is the minimum if you want to have the effects - it can be done for as long as 40 days. I would definitely recommend against modifying ingredients and amounts -- in my experience, the people who have modified are the ones who have not been able, for one reason or another, to stick to the Master Cleanse for 10 days.
-- Contributed by: Margaret GamezHi Terillis,
Yes, you can do that. Some people do the cleanse for 7 days each season. Remember that the real purpose of this fast is that it cleanses the body. Weight loss is an after-effect.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI was wondering if after the master cleanse.. Can you do it for like three days at a time once a month to maintain the cleanse and weight loss
-- Contributed by: Enter your name hereHi Newbie,
For best results you don't want to modify the amounts. When I did the Master Cleanse I found drinking the lemonade mixture with a straw helped me bypass the peppery taste. Also, don't mix the drink ahead because the longer it sits, the spicier it gets.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladToo much cayenne for me is it safe to modify this
-- Contributed by: NewbieHi Karrine,
There should be no reason to stop now. Day 4, you're doing great!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Mark,
I am at the beginning of Day 4 on the master cleanse and I must say I am doing great so far. I started my period at the end of day 1. Do I stop the MC now or can I continue since I am at day 4.
-- Contributed by: KarrineHi Mark,
I have done the Master Cleanse in the past and didn't know if I should include exercise or not. This past week I had the opportunity to interview Peter Glickman, author of "Lose Weight, Have More Energy, and Be Happier in 10 Days", and asked about exercise specifically. He said aerobic exercise is fine, but not to do muscle building exercise because the cleanse lacks protein. You can see the entire interview here:
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI have several friends that are on or have done the Master Cleanse. I am 43 and a long distance runner. I have an important race in October and wonder what your advice would be on starting at this time. Also what type of change might I have to make in my training routine while on the cleanse? Thanks for your advise.
-- Contributed by: Mark BHi Mike,
Vomiting is not a normal side effect. When I mixed my "lemonade" I only used 1/8-1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper. Plus I did not mix my lemonade ahead because the longer it sits the spicier it gets. I'd stop the cleanse and revisit it when you feel better.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladThanks so much for answering my question about chlorine while in the Master Cleanse. I have another question for you. I began the Master Cleanse yesterday, and ended up breaking it this morning because I was unable to keep anything down and vomited three times in 12 hours. Is this something I should be expecting? The book mentions very little about this being a normal side effect and says if it doesn't go away after the first day, to get off the cleanse and come back to it later. Is there anything I can do to minimize these hard side effects? I did use a full tsp. of cayenne in my day's supply drink yesterday, and wonder if that could have been the culprit? Thanks again.
-- Contributed by: Mike NelsonHi Topzzzz,
The Master Cleanse plan completely eliminates food from the diet. You might want to consider something like the Daniel Diet for Fasting or the Marthas Vineyard Detox Diet. Both allow you to eat healthy foods and still detox your body.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI am on the Master Cleanse for the first time. I eat one piece of organic fruit a day. Maybe when I try it again, I won't do any foods.
-- Contributed by: TopzzzzHi Maureen,
Sorry to hear of your difficulty. Going off the diet should introduce solid foods gradually. The first and second day drinking only 8 - 10 glasses of fresh orange juice is recommended. You can drink as much water as you need. On the third day, drink your fresh orange juice in the morning and for lunch have a little fresh fruit. For dinner eat a raw vegetable salad. The following day, start out with your fresh orange juice and for lunch you can have a fresh vegetable soup. Eat the same soup for dinner. After this your body should be ready to eat normally again. Since you've already eaten food, I'm not sure what will work. Maybe back off and try orange juice for a day. If you feel a little better, follow the above. If your condition doesn't improve call your doctor.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladSomeone please help me. I went off it 2 days ago and started to eat real foods, a can of olives and an orange and some raisins and nuts. I am so ill right now I cannot even sleep- I am so sick to my stomach. I drank chicken broth all day today but I feel the same--what can help? Please help me, I feel like I have a hangover --I am eating nothing now wondering when my stomach will feel better and knowing I am hungry and wondering when can I ever eat food again.
-- Contributed by: maureenHi Mira,
According to the founder of this diet, the original mix of ingredients was chosen to provide necessary nutrients. They recommend it not be tampered with. However, ginger tea is allowed.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladIs adding a bit of ginger to the mix, beneficial for the master cleanse?
-- Contributed by: miraHi Joyce,
They don't recommend taking medications, but bio-identical hormones are not synthetic so I don't think there should be a problem, but this is only my opinion.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Becky,
That is their recommendation, but I don't know the facts behind it. Some cramping can occur while following this diet, and you may feel tired. Perhaps they do not what to add this to symptoms that occur during the menstruation cycle.
As for going to work--it is possible, but I'd suggest it only if you are near the bathroom because when the salt water flush kicks in you'll need to get there fast. Also drinking the lemonade mixture throughout the day will keep you visiting the bathroom too.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladDo I need to stop taking my bio-identical hormones to do this cleanse?
-- Contributed by: joyce GadiotI am planning on doing the master cleanse starting nxt Monday - but it says you shouldn't do it while you are menstruating...unfortunately - this is the only 10 day time frame I can come up with and I will, in fact, be menstruating. Is there a solid reason why I shouldn't do it? Also - I am not in the position to take off work during this - will this be a problem too?
-- Contributed by: beckyHi Rebecca,
I answered some of these questions in your previous post. I too am type A and am currently on the Master Cleanse Diet. I am posting the experience on my blog Losing Weight from a Writer's POV if you'd like to track my progress. From all the advice experts offer, in general they say not to change the ingredients for each one plays a role in providing necessary elements in cleansing your body and promoting good health.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Rebecca,
Do not substitute the maple syrup or cayenne pepper with anything else. The use of honey in this lemonade is a strict 'NO'. The ingredients all serve a purpose:
- Fresh squeezed lemon juice is a potent cleanser for the body that is high in vitamins and provides cationic and anionic minerals.
- The grade B maple syrup provides a balanced form of positive and negative sugar and provides energy from an unprocessed sugar which still contains many of its original nutrients.
- Cayenne pepper breaks up mucous and facilitates cleansing of the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems.
Hi Donna, I am interested in doing the Master Cleanse. I am presently fasting with artisian well water and decaf green tea with local honey to detox my colon. My sister is on the DrNatura cleansing, but presently I do not have the funds for this. I have read how to do the Master Cleanse, but as I had asked previously, can I use honey instead of the maple syrup. Plus, what is the cayenne pepper for. I have read ginger is also good for detox. I am on a diet for my A plus blood type and it tells me to avoid cayenne pepper, so can I substitue ginger. I'd appreciate any advice on everything. Thank you, Rebecca
-- Contributed by: RebeccaI am water fasting presently to detox and found this information on THE LEMONADE DIET. I am curious if you can use raw honey instead of the maple syrup. I buy local honey for allergies for my green tea, so I'd like to use it. Would I use the same amount as the syrup? Thank you, Rebecca
-- Contributed by: RebeccaHi AJ,
Remember that this is not really a diet, but a cleanse. I wouldn't recommend it while you have to go to school as the cleansing effect will keep you running to the bathroom.
The key to losing weight is to take in less calories than you burn. You might want to keep a food diary to learn how many calories you are currently eating and then reduce that number. Sometimes becoming aware of the reality of the number of calories we are ingesting helps to motivate us to make healthier choices. You might also ask your doctor for advice on how many calories you should eat, and regular aerobic exercise will also help to burn fat, but you need to be consistent to see results.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi, I am 18 years old an i go to school about 4 days a week. I gained tons of weight while i was pregnant, and i am seriously considering doing this diet for 10 days in order to just burn off the weight i gained during pregnancy. Its been over a year since i've had the baby, and i just can't seem to shake off this weight. I've tried weight watchers, i've excercised in various gyms but nothing seems to work for me. Do you have any advice or tips for me trying the Master Cleanse diet?
-- Contributed by: AJHi Gabi,
Master Cleanse uses Grade B maple syrup because is a balanced form of positive and negative sugars. Substitutes do not work in the same way. As for the Master Cleanse--you're right it is a detoxifying cleanse. The word "diet" isn't really meant to infer that it is a weight loss plan but more refers to the intake of the nutrients in a specific way.
Congratulations on seeing it through for a whole 21 days. You must feel great! Master Cleanse recommends taking probiotics when you finish breaking your cleanse to replace the good bacteria lost while cleansing your colon. Good bacteria manufactures vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B12, and K and works to control bad bacteria, such as Candida.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi I'm on day 21 of the Master Cleanse and it is my final day. I've done this cleanse twice now both for 21 days. This second round was easier than the first time for me. Maybe because I knew what to expect. I have to stress that it is NOT a diet and should never be used for that purpose. Also, it is imperative that you not stray from the true ingredients, molasses does not have the same nutritional value as Grade B maple syrup. If you want true benefits, keep with the true ingredients. On a 21 day cleanse I lose a lot of weight but realistically you can only lose so much fat in 3 weeks, so more than half of the wight loss is muscle and water. So PLEASE realize this is for optimal health and cleansing your body, not weight loss.
-- Contributed by: gabiThanks for the clarification, Stephanie. It's important to know all the facts before starting any cleanse or diet.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI did the diet earlier this summer for three whole days. I am very proud to have even completed three days, considering all I did was consume the liquid requirements with absolutely NO solid food. I honestly expected to feel fatigue and constantly hungry, but the taste of the drink kind of supressed my appetite. I won't pretend I was never hungry because I am only human, so yes I did crave certain food. The salt water flush really took care of it's deed, so my advice for anyone who does this cleanse is to stay near a bathroom after drinking the salt water. All in all, this cleanse only lasted three days because I ended up eating solids, but it woked well for me. I lost a few lbs, gained energy, and I felt cleansed. I have started the clease again today just so I can detox my body and I am pumped to do this again! :)
-- Contributed by: JenDid the diet. Didnt follow ANY directions and still lost 9lbs in 5 days. Yes, you read correctly. I ate one meal a day of raw broccoli florets and snow peas. I drank about 3 liters of water a day and i used molasses instead of Grade B maple syrup. At first it was hard and the 3rd day was the worst. By the fourth day I didnt care anymore. My stomach shrunk and I cant eat a whole slice of Pizza up to this day. HOWEVER, this is water weight loss and if you dont eat right, you will be sure to put the weight back on in a weekend... Maybe two. I have kept off the 9lbs and I excercise and eat right to take of the remaining 30 pounds that I need to shed.
-- Contributed by: ThinkThinI am currently on Day 3 of The Master Cleanse. I have the original book by Stanley Burroughs which I have read cover to cover. I have also been doing a lot of research via the internet to see what other people's experiences have been while doing this. If people are using the salt water flush, they need to know that not only do you need to use SEA SALT, it must also be UNIODIZED sea salt for it to work properly. It seems I am finding a lot of people who are using either regular table salt, or iodized sea salt. In his book, Mr. Burroughs states that the salt water (made with the right kind of salt), "has the same specific gravity as the blood, hence the kidneys cannot pick up the water and the blood cannot pick up the salt." I just want to make sure that if people are doing this part of the cleanse they are doing it the right way!
