Hi Patience,

The best way to maintain a flat stomach is to stay at a normal weight. To do this, you'll want to take in the right amount of calories for your activity level.

  • Follow a healthy weight loss diet
  • Exercise to burn extra calories

Hi April,

Walking is an excellent exercise but if it is not safe on the road some other ideas might be:

  • Walk up and down stairs in your home
  • When shopping park far from the door and walk whenever you can
  • Use yard work for exercise: mowing the lawn, weeding your garden, raking leaves or shoveling snow.
  • Skipping rope
  • Exercise videos (pick one that matches your fitness level) – These can be checked out at your local library.

I am 25 years old and had a baby recently. I am 210 now and no matter what I do I can't shake my last 30 lbs. I watch what I eat but fall off my plan. I live in the country so there aren't any side walks to walk on and the road we live on is a very busy road so it's hard for me to get any walking in. What advice do you have for someone like me who doesn't have a lot of money to buy work out equipment?

Hi Allison,

One thing you do know is that what you've been doing isn't working. So now is a great time to make a new plan. To start, you should write down what you're eating for about a week. This is just for you. Be sure to write everything down. If you're making cookies and lick your finger, write it down.

After the week is finished take a look at your eating. Do you have patterns of times you snack? Are the foods you're choosing high in fat? Often it is not how much we eat that's the problem as much as what we choose to eat. A gram of fat has more than twice as many calories as a gram of vegetables. If you choose the right foods, you can actually eat more and lose weight.

Another key to losing weight is exercise. You don't need to go to a gym or even buy home equipment. Walking is a great way to lose weight and another is riding a bike. You'll want to exercise for at least 20 minutes a day for three days a week and then work up to five days a week. You can check out the Belly Fat Workout article for more information.

If you try this and still don't lose weight, count your calories. If your body thinks your starving it, it will slow down your metabolism and thus slow down the process of burning stored body fat. A 1200 Calorie Diet is a good place to start, but be sure to check with your doctor and get his recommendations and to be sure there aren't any other factors playing a role in keeping your weight on.

Hi cor,

You know what they say, "Those who aim at nothing usually hit it." It's no different with dieting and exercise. Having a diet plan gives guidance and structure and should ideally include an exercise program that involves strength training, aerobic activity, and stretching and flexibility exercises. Eventually, when you follow your plan for long enough, you will enjoy the benefit of weight loss and improved heath and won't have to think about it as much because it becomes part of your routine.
