Hi Alice,
You cannot compare your weight with your friends. You may be taller than them or have a larger bone structure. Instead of worrying so much about how much you weigh, think about how you're eating. You're right, making healthy choices is not easy, but if you follow the steps laid out in this article you'll be heading in the right direction. You need not only to eat right but to be active, too.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI'm 13 and weigh about 125. To me that's a lot when all my other friends weigh like 100. I at least want to weigh 100. I don't eat that heathly just because it's hard 4 me 2 stay on a diet. Please give me some advice because I really don't know what to do.
-- Contributed by: aliceHi Kay,
Great job! Thanks so much for sharing your inspiring news. You're taking the right approach and your example may just help others. I'll have to check out the cardio exercises on youtube!
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI am seventeen. I have always been heavier than my classmates. I am trying to lose weight too because I want to feel better about my appearance. I try exercising daily. This has really helped. Honestly cardio workouts even from youtube are awesome. They are quick and help you lose fat. Just eat healthy even though I do know it is hard. I have lost 20 pounds in two months by just watching what I eat and exercising by riding my bike for twenty minutes and doing a youtube cardio workout and like thirty crunches.
-- Contributed by: kayHi Zoey,
Have you talked to your mom about this? If so, one thing you can do is cut the amount your eating to help get started with weight loss. Don't eat seconds, eliminate snacks, and eat healthy portions during meals. Add regular exercise and you'll start to drop that unwanted weight. Perhaps when your mom sees your serious, she'll start buying foods to support your goals.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI'm a 14 year old girl and i weigh 242 pounds. I know this is unhealthy, but I don't know how I can change my diet very much with an unsupportive mother who only buy the things that aren't healthy. I really want to loose atleast a hundred pounds, but my if mymom won't necesarily buy the vegetables and things like that, what can I do?
-- Contributed by: ZoeyI havent had my period in half a year and I am thinking maybe it is because of my changed diet of only eating healthy foods or my excess in exercising??.. Does changing my diet or too much exercise affect my mentrual cycle?
-- Contributed by: NicHi Scared,
First off, when it comes to your health you need to think of yourself instead of what others might be thinking. You may think they would consider you a fatty if you come away with a salad, but what would they think if you come away with a burger and fries. They might think something like, look at what she's eating, no wonder she is overweight.
The point is that it doesn't really matter what they think. It matters that you do the right thing for you. There are other ways to get your vegetables in. You might try a veggie wrap. Drink plenty of water, and be sure to be active. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI'm a teenager in highshcool and I weigh way more than what I should. I want to go on a diet, but at lunch time it embarrasses me to come out of the line with a salad cause i feel people will be like look at the fatty with the salad. Could you recomend a healthy diet for me, which can still involve salad, but I can stick to easily?
-- Contributed by: scared fattyHi Shannon,
Part of how we are shaped is hereditary, but you do weigh more than you should for your height, so my guess is yes that can be changed. The key is to burn more calories each day than what you eat. You do this by exercising and eating moderately. Just follow the suggestions found in this article and it should make a difference.

-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladi am 13 11stone and 5ft 4 and i have very wide hips can this be changed ?
-- Contributed by: shannonHi Anne-marie,
You are not overweight for your height. We are all built a little differently and you just have broad shoulders. That's much better than having broad hips. Be happy.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI'm 15 and 89 kilos. I'm 5.4 ft and I'm very wide shouldered. Should i be worried?
-- Contributed by: anne-marieHi Danae,
Whether or not you are overweight is hard to determine without knowing how tall you are. You can use one of the ideal weight calculators to see the right range for you.
As for diet, the best thing is not to go on a diet but just change your eating to the healthy habits listed in this article. That will take care of any excess weight. Let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions.

You may not be overweight for your height. Have you tried one of the weight calculators to see what you should weight? Remember that you are growing and your weight will, too.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladi am 13 years old and i am fat. 8 stone and a half. can any help me???
-- Contributed by: conorHi Brittney,
The thing you have to remember is that you are unique. Don't compare yourself to others. You're still growing and your weight is fine where it is. Many girls would love to be your weight. You're eating healthy and the girls you're comparing yourself to are not. Being "thin" is not always being healthy. Drinking lots of alcohol and eating junk food takes it's toll in the long run, but those effects may not show up for years.
The important thing is not to starve yourself either. Your body is still growing and your cells need nourishment. The foods you're choosing are great! Keep up the good work and stop worrying about your weight. It is fine where it is. I suggest you stay off the scale and let your clothes tell you whether or not they fit.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHey, I'm 15 years old and weigh 8 stone 2 (on most days) I'm currently 5'6". About 6 months ago I weighed 8 stone 7/8 , I dramatically changed my diet by counting calories and choosing my meals. This worked initially, but I still feel fat, if that makes sense :S. Even though I am "ideal" on the BMI charts, I still feel like I need to lose a few pounds; 7 stone 12 being my ideal. My mum and friends tell me I'm not fat or overweight, but I always compare myself to the other girls in my year, becoming paranoid at what they eat and even though they drink so much alcohol and eat so much junk food they are so slim. Also, my weight keeps fluctuating from 8 stone to 8 stone 4... I become really depressed when I am at 8 st 4, and just generally feel happier as being 8 st. I have stopped drinking full fat drinks, eat lots of fruit and veggies a day, have the odd snack every now and then, and try to have only a 500 cal or less main meal. However, this is not working, and I'm not losing the weight I want to. I now have a bowl of cereal, an apple and some carrots for lunch, then a main meal, but then cant help but snack out after dinner. Can anyone suggest a good routine for me to do to help me shift those couple of extra pounds, and get them to stay off!! Thanks :) P.S does water help you lose weight ??
-- Contributed by: BrittneyHi Thalia,
You are not overweight, so you're mom is right. Instead, of thinking of dieting, perhaps consider exercising. That often helps people feel better. You can also talk with your family doctor for suggestions. Please stay in touch and let me know how it goes.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Sarah,
Losing weight does take time, just like gaining weight. We gain a little at a time until we realize we weigh too much. The problem is we want to just make it go away, and you're right. It does take time if we want to do it the right way.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Julian,
There are some important things to remember when dieting and still growing. You don't want to follow some fad diet that will lack in nutrition. Instead, you want to eat healthy foods that provide the nutritional essentials and enough calories to give you the energy you need. The real problem is that we tend to eat more calories than we burn and it results in weight gain. So what you need to do is cut out extra calories and to be more active. To learn what calories are right for you, check with your doctor. To get an idea of what's right for you, you can check with a calorie calculator.

If you only weight 90, it doesn't sound like you need to lose weight. We are not all the same size nor do we have the same bone structures, etc. However, it is a good idea to establish healthy eating habits. If you follow the guidelines laid out in this article it will give you a good start. Let me know if you have any questions.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Nick,
Diet is unique to each individual. What you eat and how much you eat will somewhat depend on your current size. The bigger you are, the more calories you need to maintain your current weight. Average for teenage boys is between 2,200 and 2,700 calories daily. How many of those calories you eat at each meal will depend on how many you're eating between meals. Does that make sense?
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHey my name is Nick and I'm 14 years old. I'm not fat, unfit or unhealthy in general, but I do eat a lot of things I shouldn't. The only reason I stay healthy etc. is because of how much exercise I do, which averages about 3 runs and 5 sessions of hockey. Recently, though, I injured myself and the season ended and my fitness has almost stopped but my reasonably unhealthy eating continued. I'm not fat, but I'm starting to put a bit on and with tennis next term my fitness isn't likely to increase. Would you be able to give me an example of one day of eating (so like how much and what for breakfast, and so on)? I'm not trying to loose weight, I just want to see what an ideal diet for me would be. cheers, nick
-- Contributed by: nickHi my name is Carly. I am 15 and I am struggling with my weight. I weigh 90 and I'm not happy with it. I'm thinking about going on a diet in the Christmas holidays. -- Contributed by: carlyHi Marisa,
If you follow the guidelines listed in this article you will lose weight, but it's not really "quick" and at times it is not "easy". It takes work to lose weight, but not as much as people think. The hardest part is learning to say "no" to ourselves. No to overeating, no to eating too much of the wrong foods, and no to sitting on the couch or at the computer when we should be using our Wii or going for a walk. Gaining weight is a process and losing weight is too.

-- Contributed by: marisaHi Isabelle,
Sometimes our feelings betray us. We may feel fat when we are not. Or we may feel something is healthy and it is not. The best thing you can do is to cut back on junk food. Allow yourself something like that maybe three times a week, but otherwise feed your body healthy whole foods. It will make a difference in how you feel.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi, I'm 13-years-old and I'm trying to go on a diet, but when you see me, I'm eating junk food. I'm not over weight. My weight is 52 pounds, but I'm feeling fat and unhealthy.
-- Contributed by: isabelleHi Wats,
Sounds like you're heading in the right direction. You didn't say what your questions are; you could ask them here, or you could come over to the diet forum. We have the 21 Day Challenge group who set goals for the first 21 days each month. You could pop in there and ask questions. Everyone involved is on some diet whether to lose weight or just learn to be healthier. We'd love to see you there.

One of the best exercises is walking. Start out walking for 15 minutes and gradually increase to 20 and then 30 minutes. Do this 3-5 days a week and you'll be off to a good start.

-- Contributed by: overweightHi Kassi,
You want to gradually work up to an hour. If you are having chest pains it would be a good idea to have a checkup and talk with your doctor about his/her suggestions.
Ideally, you want to include aerobic exercise at least three days a week and some kind of strength training two days. As you build muscle, it will help burn more calories even while you're resting.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi again I am wondering if maybe you could tell me a full week workout schedule that I could use I'm 5'4 and weigh 196 how long and what I should do I want to work out my legs and my stomach, when ever I run my chest begins to hurt so should I work up to a full hour each day of exercise or what?
-- Contributed by: KassiHi Joelin,
We all need calories to fuel our bodies. Teenagers are still growing and they need to provide enough calories to grow healthy bodies.
The trick is to eat healthy foods that provide the nutrients your body needs. This includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. Along with that you'll want to include plenty of water and exercise.
The function of calories is to provide the energy we need to live healthy vibrant lives. Choosing healthy calories in the right amount makes that possible.

Hi Miranda,
It might be a good idea for you to join a group that offers weight loss support. Check to see if you have a chapter of TOPS or Weight Watchers near you. Having others going through the same struggles can help you find the resolve to stick to a diet.
Another thing that might help would be to keep a food diary. This helps you see in black and white how much you're eating and when you are eating. Sometimes this helps open your eyes to the weak times during the day so you can make a plan to avoid them.
Good luck with your future weight loss plan. Let me know how it goes.

Sounds like you are ready to make a change. If you follow the guidelines in this article it should make a difference. You might want to talk to your family doctor for his guidance on how to eat.
Basic first steps to help would be:
- Don't eat seconds
- Limit dessert to once a week
- Limit snacks to fruit and vegetables
- Drink plenty of water
- Exercise 30-60 minutes five days a week
Good luck, and let me know if you have more questions.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Kassi,
You've taken the first step in making up your mind to lose. Cutting soda is huge, and the fact that you're active is great! The key to losing weight is that you have to eat less calories than you burn. It might be a good idea for you to keep a food diary for a few days to see how many calories you're eating. Then if you reduce that amount by 500 calories a day you'll lose about a pound a week. If you are eating enough calories to reduce the amount by 1000 calories you could lose two pounds a week. This may not sound like a lot but it's the healthy way to lose and keep it off. Let me know if you have more questions.

The best way to lose weight is slowly, if you want to keep it off. That means 1-2 pounds a week. If you follow the guidelines here, you'll do that. That will bring you close to the 20 pounds you want to lose.
To determine if you need to lose weight, you can check your BMI using a BMI chart for teens.

To find out if you really need to lose weight one tool that's handy is your BMI (Body Mass Index). You'll want to check a BMI Chart for Teens.
If you just need to lose a little on certain spots, you might just need to up your exercise level. Take a look at that chart and let me know if you have any questions.

Are you eating 1,000 calories for the whole day? That might not be enough for you depending on how tall you are. Yes you will lose weight, but you might want to consider eating at least 1200 calories. You'd still lose weight but a little slower. However, losing it slow is the best way for the long term if you want to keep it off.

First of all congratulations on reaching out for help. I can give you basic advice, but it will be best to talk with your doctor because he/she know you best. The best way to go is to follow a healthy diet that is full of fruits, vegetables and whole grains...plus some lean protein.

I hear your desperation. The key to losing weight is to eat less calories than you burn. I suggest you figure out how many calories you eat on average. If you cut that by 500 calories a day, you will lose one pound a week without changing your exercise and activity. If you're eating enough to cut 1,000 then you will lose two pounds a week or about 8 in a month.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

I don't know what to do and my doctor just keeps on telling me to keep up the excersize, but it just isn't working...three months ago I only weighed 185lbs, and I haven't been depressed or nothing! I want to try diet pills but my mother won't let me, I try working out on the bowflex my father has but NOTHING. I've never been able to lose weight, and I am desperate....PLEASE HELP!
-- Contributed by: LindseyHi Kevin,
You ask some good questions. First, it's important to know that your weight can fluctuate from day to day. It's best to weigh yourself in the morning before you eat, and not to weigh too often. I'd say at the most weigh yourself once a week, because healthy weight loss is a slow process.
As for how to lose weight, it might help if you know how many calories you're eating right now. Keep track fro about three days to get an idea. Then, cut that by 500 calories a day and you'll lose a pound a week. If you want to lose more, you can cut back by 1000 calories and lose two pounds a week. If you up your exercise you'll lose a little more. If you do strength training three days a week this will help to build lean muscle which burns more calories even when you're resting.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Everyone says I don't need to, but I want to. So if there is any way you can help me out I would really like it.

Unfortunately there's no "magic" way to lose weight. It takes consistency on your part. If you follow the guidelines in the article, you will lose weight, but to help with the motivation aspect, maybe you can join a gym, find a partner who also wants to lose weight, or make up a graph to track your progress. Different things work for different people.
One exercise program that might help is the 5BX Program. It only requires a little bit of time each day and provides a chart to see your progress.
Along with that, be sure to drink plenty of water. That will help you eat less. The key is that you need to burn more calories than you eat. Starting with exercise to build lean muscle will help because it will burn more calories even while you're resting.
Let me know how it goes.

Sounds like you are ready to take steps to stay in shape. I don't know what your ideal weight is, but the best thing you can do at this point is to be more active. This will help burn calories and tone your body.
You and your friend could also try the XBX plan. It only takes 12 minutes a day and provides a chart for you to watch your progress and record your measurements and weight.
It will also help to cut back on junk food. As you exercise more, you may be surprised that your desire for junk food might just lessen, too.
Let me know how it goes.

You can eat chocolate, but the quantity is what you need to take note of. Figure out how many calories you need to lose weight. This differs from person to person. Once you have that number, you can look at the calories in your chocolate and figure out how to fit it into your eating and still lose weight.

First it is a good idea to figure out how many calories you are eating now. If you cut that by 500 calories a day, you'll lose a pound a week. How many calories you need depends on age, gender and height. You can use an online calculator to help find the right amount for you.

To get beyond the texture problem, you may want to try juicing your fruits. A juicer will remove the fiber and leave all the taste.
As for vegetables, not all vegetables taste the same and each veggie can taste differently depending on how it is prepared. Just like a french fry tastes different than mashed potatoes, so it is with vegetables. For example, if you like mashed potatoes, you might just like mashed cauliflower. Be creative, Take a chance. Eat a vegetable.

While encouragement to eat right is great, not many dieters get it so you're in the same boat as many of us. Do you only have one meal option at school? That is odd. If you were a vegetarian would they have to make you something else? If you can't do anything about what the meal is, just eat less of it if you need to lose weight.
Also, to build muscle you will need to do some resistance exercises. Here's a link to an 11 minute workout plan you can do at home. It's free.
As for home, request your mom buy healthier choices for snacks. Skip the sodas and drink water. Each little step will make a difference.

-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi, I am 15 about to turn 16 and I want to lose weight this summer. I have parents that work all the time so I don't really have the option of all the family encouragement etc. I want to lose weight and maybe gain a little muscle but being a kid I can't buy the healthy foods and at school you have a meal that you can eat or go hungry so I am stuck. I was wondering if anyone would have any tips for me?
thanks
-- Contributed by: NickHi Anna,
Sounds like you've got a plan. If you follow the steps in this article you should be able to lose most of your weight over the summer. The key is to make healthy food choices and to be active. Don't eat while watching TV or on the computer because that is an easy way to eat more than you need.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Jaimie,
Losing weight is a process. You've already taken some important steps. Some other things to add to your plan are aerobic exercise like walking or riding your bike, no fried foods including things like chips or fries, and limit desserts to twice a week. The key is to eat less calories than you burn. Check out how much a serving is before you eat something. Sometimes we are eating "seconds" on our first plate.

-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladPlease help me. I need help. I'm 20 pounds over weight and I'm a 6th grader. I want to lose the weight over summer and be in 7th grade thin and feeling good about myself and have fun. Please give me help...
-- Contributed by: annaI weigh about 160 pounds and I'm almost 5'3. I'm going into 10th grade next year and it will be my first year at a public high school (i was home schooled last year). I have big bones-I got it from my mom, and so people don't always think I weigh as much as I do. But, I really want to go down at least 2 clothes sizes (i want to be able to fit into size 11 jeans) and I don't want to have so much stomach flub. I've been doing sit ups and stuff every day, and not eating seconds and drinking lots of water, but nothing helps really. I lose a bit, but then it doesn't ever seem like it. I would really really like to be a little less flubby in my stomach by the time school starts in September. Any way to fix this?
-- Contributed by: JaimieHi Allie,
The steps listed in this article will help, but here are a few other things you can do:
- Don't eat while watching TV
- Don't eat while using the computer
- Don't eat more than two small snacks between meals
- Don't eat seconds
Things to do:
- Get some exercise--go for a walk around the block. Try to walk for at least 20 minutes 3-5 times a week.
- Eat more vegetables and fruits
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day
These are not big changes in your daily routine, but if you make them you can see a big difference in your weight.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Vikki,
I can understand your frustration. I suggest, instead of trying to follow a certain program, first write down everything you eat for three days along with the times you're eating and what else you're doing at the time.
This should help you see a pattern. Often, if you set some rules for yourself like, no eating while watching TV or at the computer it can help cut down on snacking. Don't let yourself have seconds, and only have dessert twice a week. Taking little steps like this will help you cut down on how many calories you're taking in.
The problem with eating while we do something else is that we mindlessly eat more than we need. If we only eat, the food is much more enjoyable and we need less of it to be satisfied. I hope this helps, let me know how it goes. August is still far enough away you can lose significant weight.

-- Contributed by: vikkiHi Rebecka,
Don't get discouraged. Are you trying to lose weight? If so, losing one to two pounds a week is the best way to go. To help you see what you're eating, write it down and see how what you eat effects our weight. If your weight stays the same that means you're eating enough to maintain your weight. If you want to lose, you'll have to cut back. Does that make sense?
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Luigi,
Our bodies are designed to move. Food is the fuel to keep them running. The best thing you can do is to find something you like to do that get's you moving. Maybe a Wii Fit would be something to look at for you. It could combine one of your hobbies and get you moving.
As for what you're eating, don't forbid yourself to have chocolate, just cut back. Learning to eat in moderation will help keep you satisfied without eating too much.

That's a great first step eliminating soda and substituting water. In fact, that's a good change for better health, not just for people who want to lose weight.

Sorry for writing another comment, but I wanted to give you more information about me. I hope this is good for male teenagers. I am 15 years old and I am not that overweight but I would like to remove some fat. I don't exercise much. From 7:30AM - 3:00PM I spend my time at school. My hobbies are to watch TV, playing on the computer and on the Nintendo WII. I've never tried doing different diets before, but sometimes I will be scared that once I start I give up. Sometimes during the day I like to eat for no good reason, just because I want to. My greatest weaknesses are chocolate.
Can you give me any tips? Anything you might advise would be most helpful. Thank you so much!
Waiting for your Reply...
-- Contributed by: Luigi GrechHello my name is Luigi Grech. I am 15 years old and I really interested in your teenager diet program. I used to drink a lot of soda. Now I'll be drinking water from now on. Thanks a lot.
-- Contributed by: Luigi GrechHi Bekah,
It sounds to me like you know what you need to do, it's just a matter of making a habit of the right things. Since you like to watch TV, you might want to get a stationary bike to put in front of the TV so you can move while watching TV. Another thing you might try is using some of the Wii exercise games.
Along with more movement, limit your chocolate to maybe three times a week, and only one serving. Learning to cut back your calories and increase your exercise is a win-win situation for losing weight.

-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi!
I am 16 years old and a little overweight. I do pilates 3 times a week most of the time, but other than that, I don't get in many other physical activities. I do lots of school, watch lots of TV, and do computer stuff... so I'm basically sitting down most of the day. I've tried doing different diets before, but I simply can't make them work.. it´so frustrating. And, to make matters worse, I love to eat. I eat for no good reason, just 'cause I want to. My greatest weaknesses are chocolate and baked goods.
Can you give me any tips? Anything you might advise would be most helpful. Thanks!
-- Contributed by: BekahHi Laura,
To help reduce your anxiety you can try these things to see if it helps with your binge eating:
- Avoid refined sugar
- Reduce your intake of grains (bread, pasta, flour products) because some people with allergies will experience anxiety.
- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
- Cut caffeine from your diet
- Drink plenty of water
The key to maintaining your weight is to take in as many calories as you burn. To figure this out, you'll need to track how many calories you're eating for a few days and see what you average. If you're weight is up, you'll have to eat less than that and if it is under your goal weight, you'll have to bring them up a little.
Let me know if you have questions.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Sophie,
You've got more than one thing going for you. First of all, you are active. Second of all, you realize that you're eating out of boredom. The thing you need to realize is that your body is probably still growing and you will gain weight. But you are wise to want to keep an eye on it because many people don't see they're gaining until it is an issue. It's a good idea to talk with your family doctor about what your ideal weight should be.
To break the habit of eating out of boredom some of the things I've tried is to not eat if I'm watching TV, on the computer or reading a book. While I should not be bored while doing any of those things, for some reason I find it easy to eat while I'm doing them.
Another thing you can do is look for a hobby--something to keep your hands busy. If you pick something that takes two hands, it makes it harder to eat! Let me know how it goes.

You have a couple of things going for you. First, you're active. Second, you know what the problem is; you need to make healthier food choices and eat less.
Start by keeping a food journal. Write down what you eat and the time of day. After a week, look for patterns. Don't eat while watching TV or using the computer and try to limit snacks to two a day.
Also avoid sugary treats and drinks and fried foods. Stay in touch and let me know how it goes.

The basics to lose weight is to burn more calories than you eat. The answer is not starving yourself, but learning to eat a sensible amount and exercising regularly. Hi Jovanna,
The best suggestion I can make is for you to eat when you're hungry and stop when you are satisfied...and add exercise to your life.
If you really pay attention to when you're hungry and not eat because your bored, or because your friends are eating, it can make a difference.

The water diet is NOT good for you...especially people your age who are still growing. Instead, you want to focus on eating reasonable amounts of the right foods.
If you don't have much time to exercise, you might want to look into the Royal Canadian Air Force Exercises. They only take 12 minutes a day and will help you lose as well as firm and tone.
Let me know if you have any questions.

If you don't have time to follow a specific diet, take these steps to help you drop some of your unwanted weight.
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day
- Cut out fried foods and sweetened drinks
- Don't eat seconds
- Don't eat dessert more than three times a week
- Limit snacks between meals to a piece of fruit
This isn't a specific diet, but does help you stop to think about your food before you eat it. Let me know how it goes!

The best way to lose that belly fat is to take in less calories than you burn. This doesn't mean you have to starve yourself, it only means making smarter choices and being more active. I suggest you cut out most sweets and limit the number of fats and starches you eat in a day. Above all get some exercise to help you burn those calories. Walking is ideal. The minimum is 3 days a week for 30 minute walks, but five days a week is even better. Here are a few more articles that might help:
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHello, I just need to lose about five or ten pounds off my belly in particular so I don't look pregnant in my dress for prom next month. Any tips?
-- Contributed by: RoxanneHi Miss M,
Body type will have some to do with your build, but there are exercises designed to work that specific part of your body. You didn't say whether or not you have a little weight to lose, that can make a difference, too. Make sure you get regular exercise like walking or biking at least three days a week and then target your thighs with toning exercises at least two days a week. That should make a difference. Let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions.
-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladi am a little short and my thighs are a little big what should i do i want my legs to be thinner so then i can look taller.
-- Contributed by: miss MHi Shanelle,
Here's the good news. You don't need fancy machines. All you need to do is go out for a walk. It's perfect because it gets you out in the fresh air. Plan to walk at least three days a week, but five is better. Walk for 30 - 60 minutes.
As for your diet try this for two months. Don't eat unless you are hungry. Just for two months. If your stomach isn't growling or giving you that burning hunger signal...wait to eat. Then when it's time to eat go ahead and eat a small plate of food. Take your time and enjoy it and then wait again until you are hungry to eat.
If you eat less and exercise more, you will lose weight quickly. Let me know how it goes.

How many days a week should i exercise on it? And i have a constant "junk food nag" built inside my brain, and i can't stop it. I also need help finding the right healthy foods that are good for me, but don't cost a fortune to buy every week. Can you help me?
-- Contributed by: ShanelleHi Megpie,
You ask some pretty good questions which many people young and old can relate to. The thing is that you have identified your problems. You eat all day and sit around all day. To lose weight you have to move around enough to burn more calories than you're taking in.
The first thing I would suggest is to find an activity you like. If you're not really interested in sports at least get out and walk or ride your bike for like 30 minutes 5 days a week. This will make a difference in how you feel about yourself too. One trick to work on those belly rolls is to learn to hold your stomach in. To help with this, while your walking, suck your stomach in and count to 10. Let it out, count to 10 and then suck it in again. This helps train your stomach muscles to be held tight.
Try this first, and let me know how it goes after the first week.

Hi Irwin,
When you say no sugar, I assume you mean no refined sugar. That's just as well. When it comes to fats, your body needs healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados, nuts, etc. to function properly and to absorb essential vitamins.
To gain weight, you can eat more whole grains, drink shakes made with frozen bananas and fruit rather than ice cream. For more ideas, read our article on How to Gain Weight.
Hi Tyler,
Eating at McDonalds all the time is not healthy, and eating lettuce and peanuts all the time is not healthy. Our bodies need a balanced source of nutrients to grow new healthy cells. Just like Christy likes McDonalds and you don't want to change--neither is a healthy choice.

What is easy for one person is not always easy for another. However, I suggest instead of worrying about a specific diet, follow healthy eating habits listed in this article. Choose healthy snacks, be sure to eat reasonable portions, and exercise. That should do it! You didn't say if you want to lose or maintain your weight. The key is to provide your body with the calories it needs for energy to reach a healthy weight.

-- Contributed by: bbtHi Brenda,
It's not better for the body. Teens are still growing and need to feed their bodies good nutritional foods. When you don't it can lead to other problems. In fact, a recent study says that "America's tweens and teens more than doubled their use of type 2 diabetes medications between 2002 and 2005, with girls between 10 and 14 years of age showing a 166 percent increase." Poor nutrition and lack of exercise take their toll on overall health. You can read the whole article here.

-- Contributed by: BrendaHi Monique,
That is true, eating less will help you lose weight, however while you're still growing it's also important that you get enough calories and nutrition for a growing body. The key is to make wise food choices and to get regular exercise. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment here at LoveToKnow Diet. It's nice to have you here.

Salads are a good choice. What dressing you add can make them less healthful. The Ranch dressing adds 170 calories while the low-fat varieties are between 40-90 calories.
McDonald's snack wraps are 340 calories with 17 grams of fat (for the crispy) or 270 calories and 10 grams of fat for grilled. So it depends on what kind of wraps you're eating along with you're diet the rest of the day, and how many wraps you eat at a time.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Taniya,
As a teenager, or really anyone for that matter, it is better to get the idea of "diet" out of your head and start to think of the basics. If you follow what is written in this article you'll change over to a healthy eating plan with plenty of fruits, vegetables, protein and whole grains. If you make your food choices from these categories, your body will receive the nutrients it needs.
Let me know if you have more questions.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladMy healthy diet consists of eating fruit and veg every single day, cutting out fatty foods (such as chips, soda, lollies, fast food eg.) and adding more wholesome healthy food in (such as salad sandwiches, fish, almonds, fruit and veg, lean meat, eggs) On top of that aim to drink 8 glasses of water a day if you are at school take a drink bottle with water and aim to drink the whole bottle (thats around 8 glasses depending on the size of the bottle) I only eat lollies on occaisons like parties or as a treat and instead snack on things like almonds, healthy crackers and low fat dips
-- Contributed by: emmaCan anyone please give me a weekly diet for a teenager that consume all nutrients? Thank you
-- Contributed by: taniyaHi Jo,
First let me say that your parents are right. Skipping meals is not healthy for a growing boy. You need proper nutrition for strong bones, to build lean muscle and for the energy you need to function.
With that said, let's tackle your first question. You can still eat your rice. My suggestion is to limit the rice you eat to one cup at a meal. That's plenty to go with your vegetables and meat. Try to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Have fruit for breakfast for example. You can freeze fruit and blend it in the blender with some water or milk for a delicious frozen treat that's good for you.
Secondly, indoor exercise. You might want to look into getting a mini trampoline or an exercise ball. Both of these can work for you. In fact, you can use your ball even while doing homework.
Let us know how it goes!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Taylor,
I'm not sure how tall you are, but I want to be sure that you set a realistic goal weight for yourself. It's a good idea to talk with your doctor, too, to get his expert opinion because he knows all your medical history.
You're approaching weight loss in a smart way. Slow and steady is the way to do it. Exercise is a key to success, and you don't have to overdo it. Go for a walk for 30 minutes 5 days a week. Take the stairs when you can.
When it comes to food choices avoid:
Sugary snacks and drinks Fried foods (including chips)
If you want to be strict, avoid second helpings and only eat dessert once a week.
I'm so proud of you for taking these steps to better health. You'll not only look better but feel better too! Let us know how it goes and if you have any other questions.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi, I'm Jo, I'm 15 years old and I weigh about 152 pounds. I've been meaning to try some diet... I don't know what is the proper diet for me, so I just stop eating breakfast and dinner. My parents told me that it is not healthy for a growing boy to stop eating breakfast and dinner. But I'm confused about the ideal diet for me. I'm an Indonesian and I don't do sports. I could only do ports when it is a holiday. Why? cause my school starts very early around at 7 am everyday. And I get back from school at 3 pm. And I still got a lot of homework to do. (I'm studying at one of the best private schools in Jakarta which makes it the most difficult school right here). So I don't have any time to do sports. I can't jog because the air here is polluted (you can't even imagine it). What I was wondering are :
1. What food should I eat? How can I count the calories that I have consumed on one day? Because we Indonesian have to eat our rice. But I'm willing to make sacrifices...for example I am willing to stop eating rice.
2. What kind of sports can I do? I don't have the time to do exercises outside of my house. I only could do exercises in my home.
Oh, and I was wondering...could you tell me when is the age limit for a boy to stop getting taller?
Thanks....

Hi Aly,
A more realistic goal would be to lose about 25 pounds between now and then. Take the time to count up how many calories you are eating to be sure you are not eating more than you need, and bump up your exercise to at least 5 days a week.
You are really doing a good job, and I'm so proud of you for taking the initiative to take care of yourself. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

- eating more fruits and less junk
- drinking less pop except for a little Pepsi
- exercising every other day for 30 minutes
- trying to remove the stress in my life but kinda failing
I was wondering if there was more I could do. I want to weigh at least 140 pounds by Dec. 16. Do you think that's possible? If so what can I do. If not, what is a better goal and how do I do that?

It's great that you've made a decision to change. That's a big step. Now let's take a look at what has worked for you. Getting braces. When people first have their braces put on, their teeth usually hurt and it slows down their eating. But then as you get used to them, you pick up speed.
Take the time to be sure you chew your food. To get in the habit count your chewing. Try for 15 times a bite. This will allow your mind to catch up with the signals your stomach is sending when you are full.
Also, avoid eating seconds and limit yourself to one snack a day, and one dessert a week. Keep up with your walks and try to work up to walking one mile in 15 minutes.
Good luck! Check back in with us and let us know how you progress!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladWell I'm 13, 5'2" and I weigh about 168. I have been getting better. I used to weigh 179. And then I got braces in February. I lost about ten pounds. I weighed 164 in the begging of summer. And then went on vacation and gained to 168. So now I'm stuck there. I usually wear 11, 13 in juniors. I wear an xl in shirts. And I do eat junk. But usually I take walks about every day, about 1-2 miles. But I'm not happy with the way I look. I want to know how 2 lose weight and how to make myself feel and look pretty. I want to change. And I am willing to make one.

-- Contributed by: taylotHi Autumn,
That is a bit of a dilemma, but don't give up hope. Let's start by making the changes you can make. The first one is exercise. To help speed up weight loss, you'll want to be sure to exercise at least 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. That's a starting point. Once you get in the habit, you may even increase the time or number of days.
Next, at meals avoid seconds and don't eat dessert. Drink water instead of soda or juices.
Between meals avoid snacking. If there isn't good snacks, then try to avoid them all together. You may be a little hungry between meals, but that's okay. When your stomach grumbles, remind yourself that the thinner you is on the way!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI am 15, and I am 5'2. I weigh 170. Weight problems run in the family. I ask for healthy food in the house, but even when I do. My brothers and sister eat every bit so all that is left is junk. I try to drink as much water as I can...but I cant seem to loose any weight.
What do I do?
-- Contributed by: AutumnHi Jenny,
At your age 20 pounds is a lot of weight. I not saying you should or shouldn't lose it, but I do suggest that you talk with your parents and doctor. If you are overweight, they will suggest a healthy diet. The things that will help the most will be:
- Get out and move--play outside, ride your bike, take up a sport
- Cut out junky snacking. Switch over to fruit and veggies
- Don't take seconds. One plate of food is enough.
Hope that helps. Good luck and let us know if you have other questions.

You need to step out on your own here. When mom and dad want to eat unhealthy snacks don't join in. Perhaps your good example will help them make some changes too.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi how can i take this diet when my mom & dad always have a craving for unhealthy snacks ?
-- Contributed by: JulietteHi Morgan,
There's basically one way to lose weight. Burn more calories than you take in. Eat more foods that are low calorie...watch out for high fats, sugar and things that add calories you don't need. Getting out and going for a 30 minute walk can really help too. If you get in the habit right away at school, it will become part of your routine.
Good luck.

Swollen hands are common when people walk, but if you are experiencing more than that or your hands don't go back to normal in a couple of hours it's important that you talk to your doctor.
As for your legs, this can be the normal aches and pains that accompany the start of a new exercise program, but again, if you think it might be more than that it is important to talk with your doctor.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI'm back with another question, I'm 379 lbs I been having pains in my arm and legs for a while. I started walking again a week ago, I stopped becasue my fingers started to tightend. I was wondering can you please help me with this problem, or tell me what is wrong with me.

According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more and more teenagers are overweight. For the most part, the cause is physical inactivity, unhealthy eating or a combination of both. Many times we think being overweight is an appearance issue but that's not the whole picture. If your daughter is overweight it can also affect her:
- joints
- breathing
- sleep
- mood
- energy levels
By this list, you can see you are probably right about her weight changing her mood because in reality it changes her quality of life. With this in mind, let's go back to inactivity and diet. That's what needs to change. The key is for her to eat less calories than she burns. You can help by stocking healthy choices in the house, and ask her to go for a walk with you after dinner. This won't just help her, but will help you too.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI'm looking to help my teenage daughter. She is the most beautiful person I know. Loving, caring, but something has changed with her personality. I believe it is her weight.... Help me help her be the happiest teen within herself.

Your weight loss goal is realistic, and the fact that you've made up your mind that it is time to do something proactive is just what you need. Losing weight is a long-term goal. If you really want to do it in a healthy way, you'll lose 1-2 pounds per week, although it usually comes off faster than that at the beginning.
To start, it's important to understand that to lose, you'll have to burn more calories than you take in. For your size, the 1200 calorie diet would probably work great. Before you start, though, it would be good to count the calories you are currently eating just to help you put it into perspective. Along with this, it's important to exercise for about 30 minutes or more 5 days a week. You can accomplish this by going for a walk, joining a gym, riding a bike or whatever you enjoy.
Good luck, and let me know how you're doing along the way. Today is a great day to start.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi, I'm not very happy about my size. I weigh 140 pounds and I am 5'0. For my age I should way 110-115 pounds. I want to lose at least 15-20 pounds. please help me. I want to be happy and healthy.
-- Contributed by: JessalynHi Danika,
The ideal weight for your height is about 107 pounds, so you don't really need to lose weight. Perhaps what you need instead is toning through exercise. Your weight is fine. Eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly and you'll feel better about how you look.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Keisha,
You've taken the first step to weight loss. You've admitted that you not only need to lose weight, but that you want to. Congratulations. Now, the first step is to change you're eating. This will require making choices that include eating less calories than you burn, and adding exercise to your weekly routine. 30 minutes of walking 5 days a week is a good place to start.
As for what diet plan you choose, it can be something like counting calories or carbs, or eating pre-packaged meals like the Medifast Diet provides. It's a good idea to check with your doctor for recommendations because he knows your health history.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi, I'm not overweight, but I want to lose between 5-10 pounds. I am 5'2" and I weigh 100-105 lbs. The higher the number goes; the more I want to lose some weight. If there is any help, please help.
-- Contributed by: DanikaHey! My name is Keisha, I'm 5'11" and I weight about 378 pounds. I was wondering, does anybody have any information for me, to lose this weight? I really want to. If you can help thank you very much.
-- Contributed by: KeishaHi Jasmine,
You can make a simple change like substituting a salad or fruit for one of your meals and adding regular exercise like walking or riding your bike for 30 minutes 5 days a week. The key to losing weight is to burn more calories than you eat. Good luck and thanks for visiting LoveToKnow Diet.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHey my name is Jasmine.Im 16 year old. I'm not over weight, but i do feel as thought i need to lose some pudginess thats by my stomach area.I'm not self conscious, because I'm not ashamed to wear a two piece bathing suite, but what I wanted to know is there any food plans you would consider for someone trying to lose about 10 pounds?
-- Contributed by: JasmineHi Tman,
It's not easy, you're right. Do your parents know how you feel? Let them know you want to make healthier choices. Learn to do the best you can with what you have available. Eat smaller portions. If you need to lose weight, skip desserts, don't have seconds, avoid snacks high in sugar or fat, and add exercise to your routine. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes 5 days a week. Once you start to make these changes, and your parents see a difference in you, maybe they'll be motivated to lose weight too.
To start, set some goals for the week. Like, no seconds, no desserts and exercising 5 days. A week at a time, it will make a difference.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHello my name is Tman and I am sending you this letter because it is so hard to eat a healthy diet when you have anybody to do it with for help. See, my mother and step-father are overweight and they are not trying to lose but say they are. I don't think so. I don't have anybody to help, Please read my letter. Thank you, and have a very blessed day From, Tman
Hi Anna,
One thing is necessary to lose weight. Your body must burn more calories than you are eating. Just from what you said, I'd suggest you bump up your exercise to 5 days a week. 30 minutes a day works, and you can usually find it if you try. Second, you'll want to take a look at your portions. Many times people don't realize how many servings they are eating. For example, it is not unusual for a restaurant to place 4 servings on a plate and call it one. Just look at food labels and check the serving size.
As for vegetables, I suggest you experiment with new ways to eat them. Fresh green beans dipped in a low fat dressing can be surprisingly tasty.
Another thing you might try is keeping a food diary for a week or two. Sometimes a diary reveals eating that we aren't aware of. And check how many calories are in that shake you're drinking. They often have enough calories to be used in place of a meal, not along with a meal.
Ask your doctor for recommendations too. He knows your medical history and can make suggestions relative to your bone structure, etc.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHey...
Okay, I'm fat. My name is Anna. I am 14-years-old, turning 15 in a October. I weigh about 171 and I am 5'5 ish (not actually sure). I want to be around 135. Most of my fat is basically my thighs and stomach. Although I am 171, I have been told I look about 120. I try to eat healthy and be active but at the moment I run on the weekends and bike as well. I eat all three meals and fairly good portions, I believe. I don't eat junk food. But I have a problem. For certain reasons, I just can't stomach most vegetables like carrots peas or broccoli. I drink a doctor prescribed shake that includes all of the nutrients needed, though I cant seem to loose any weight. I wanted to join a gym but my mother doesn't want me to because it wouldn't work out in our life schedule. Please help me.
-- Contributed by: AnnaHi Sabrina,
Without more specifics it's not possible to give you an certain daily calorie amount. How many calories you need depends on a number of factors including:
- physical size (not just your weight but your frame size and height)
- how much exercise you getâhow active you are
In general the calorie range recommended for the average teenage girl is 2200 per day. For guys it's 2500-3000 calories.
As a guideline, caloric guidelines recommend
- carbohydrate (50-60 percent)
- fat (20-30 percent)
- protein (10-20 percent)
This isn't really a diet but rather a healthy, balanced eating plan. Exercise plays an important factor in weight management. For teens it's a good idea to get in the habit of exercising vigorously for at least 30 minutes 3-5 days a week.
You won't lose all your weight over the summer, but you'll be able to make a big difference. Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.
-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladhi, OK well i'm really FAT i weight 334 and i'm 14 it is really not good i need help. how many calories should i eat a day? can i lose a lot of weight in a summer or am i going to be known as the fat girl in high school. HELP!!!!
-- Contributed by: SabrinaHi Whitney,
Your ideal weight will be determined by your height and bone structure. One test to learn what size frame you have is to make a bracelet with your thumb and middle finger around your wrist. If your thumb and finger tip overlap you have a small frame, if they touch you have a medium frame and if they don't quote touch, then you have a large frame. From there you'll have a better and more realistic idea of what your ideal weight should be.
I suggest you talk to your family doctor about it too. He'll probably be able to give you just the right guidelines to help make better food choices.
Another thing that will really help is to exercise for 30 minutes at least three times a week, but 5 times a week is better.
Here are a couple of other links that might help too! Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.
-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladhi i am a 12 year old bout to be a teen in a couple of days and i know i am fat i weigh 170 and i really want to weigh 98 or at least 120! is that bad what do i need to weigh..... i want to be able to fit in junior clothes!!!!!!!!!!!!

No matter where you go in life, you will find people offering one more piece of cake. If you're looking for help, I'd suggest finding another friend who is committed to eating healthy and doing it together. You can keep food diaries and compare notes. Plus, you can write down ways to say "no thank you" when people want you to eat more than you know you should.
Good luck in your quest for good health. There's no better day to start than today!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHey I' also 13 and going onto high school woah! haha And I need to lose weight to but my family is not helping because their soooo into junk and sweets. I really want to know how to get into shape. I dont want to lose a LOT of weight but enough to feel healthy. Can anyone help me? And I read Donna's advice, and it's really good, but I'm so bad at planing ahead and will power. Ugh, I cant do it. I come from a family that goes, "one more slice of cake won't hurt as long as its small." Even if you've already eaten 3 big pieces. Does anyone have any advice or diet plans I can follow?
-- Contributed by: ArianaHi Natalie,
It's great that you're ready to lose weight, and you're giving yourself a reasonable amount of time to do it. Exercise is a big part of burning calories, so get active for at least 30 minutes everyday. As for diet, it would be a good idea to check with your doctor to get his recommendations. The obvious changes to make will include reducing sugar and fat and adding more fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Good luck, you can do it!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Nalini,
Unfortunately, will power is a necessary ingredient to successful weight loss. The best way to help develop will power is to develop a plan and follow it. If you have NO will power, I suggest planning your meals and snacks for the day and following that plan. The more you practice this habit, the stronger your will power will become.
If you're wondering where to start, I suggest you write down everything you eat for about three days as you decide what diet plan is right for you. As you do this, it brings awareness to how much you eat, and what you eat. Sometimes how much you eat is not as much of a problem as the food choices we make.
Lastly, exercise is a big part of losing weight and maintaining weight loss and good health. It doesn't have to be complicated. Go out for a walk. You have to walk for 20 minutes before you start burning fat, so walk for at least 30 minutes.
You can do it Nalini, just put your mind to it. What you really want is to be thinner.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladSame here. I am 13 years old and I too will be going into high school in 5 months. I try to loose the weight but i cant. Can someone please help me?

pls help.
-- Contributed by: NaliniHi Najma,
If your doctor says you are overweight then it's a good idea to check with him for recommendations. As a rule of thumb, a few things you can do to take steps in the right direction include:
- Go for a walk or other exercise for at least 30 minutes a day
- Cut out junk food (no chips, candy, cakes, etc.)
- Avoid sugary drinks
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day
These two steps will make a difference.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi, I am Najma and I am 13. I feel as though if i don't lose weight then I might as well die, but my mum doesn't feel that way. My friends and doctor say that I am fat but my mum says I am not. I tried to lose weight but I end up putting some on on instead. I am going to high school in 5 months and don't want to get bullied. What should i do?
