I would like to know while I am having the grapefruit diet, may I eat fruits between meals? What kind of fruits would you recommend me to have & NOT to have?

Hi Suzie,

The fact that you realize it isn't a long term diet is a major factor. Congratulations on your weight loss. Now is also the time to determine what diet you'll follow when you transition from this diet to what is next.

Have been doing this diet for just two days - following it to the letter . I'm thrilled by the results , lost about 4lbs already - feel really well, healthy and not hungry yet! I know it's short term but if it gives me the kick start I need then that can't be bad! Highly recommend!

Hi Ins,

If you must drink coffee with sugar, count the calories. If you don't want to spend your calories in your coffee, switch to another calorie free beverage like water.

I just have a question. What will happen if i put sugar in my coffee? I can't stand it w/o sugar.

Hi Shay,

I haven't done the grapefruit diet, but I have had the same experience with the Lemonade Diet. With the Lemonade Diet you eat no solid food for 10 days. Even with eating no food, my weight could fluctuate by two pounds without blinking. Due to that, I say, you can't always trust what the scale says. Just use it as a guide. You're clothes and a measuring tape will give you a clearer picture of your progress.

Hi 3 weeks,

Congratulations on your weight loss! That is amazing. That's what I lost in three weeks while doing the Lemonade Diet. I think your taking a wise approach. Check back in with us and let us know how it's going in another three weeks. I'd like to know. Maybe I'll go have one of those grapefruits in my refrigerator.

I have been on this diet for 3 weeks going off sometimes by eating small portions of pasta w/veggies. I have been eating mostly salads, veggies, chicken, fish & some cheese. I have not had bread at all. I have lost at least 15 lbs. so far. One of the things that I noticed was a flatter stomach after a week. I do agree that the diet doesn't stay balanced for optimal health. I also started an exercise program at least 3 x per week. Once I achieve 25 lbs. I will incorporate some whole grains and continue to exercise. I also notice that stomach capacity has decreased therefore my portions are smaller. I have not noticed an uncontrollable appetite as well. I always found that after eating carbs I have more of an appetite in the morning. Surprisingly I am not tired of eating & drinking grapefruit.

Hi Lenny,

You must be thrilled at the results. This is not a long-term diet though, so you should start to investigate now to find the plan you will follow to maintain your weight loss.

I started the diet on a Thursday and had lost 7 pounds by the end of the day Monday. I am going to go 7 days on then 2 days off and see how it works. On my two days off, I am going to be eating some starches, fruits, and of course a pizza.

Hi Twinkle,

I would not recommend staying on this diet for life because it isn't balanced. For optimal health, you want to eat a balanced healthy diet.

I was on the diet. I weighed 180 pounds and lost 40 pounds in 3 months!! It really works. To supplement the loss of vitamins I did take a daily multi vitamin every morning and also opted for turkey bacon instead of pork, and had a lot of my meats "breaded" like nuggets, or fish with batter ect. and still lost 40 pounds!! BUT it is easy to gain the weight back if you do not stay on this type of diet long-term..it MUST be a lifetime commitment!! Except change up to every weekend add carbs, not the 12 days..or else you'll keep getting thinner!! Yikes it happened to me...

Hi Christy,

Thanks for sharing the specifics. Have you tried the diet?

As you can see you can have at bedtime either 8oz of skim milk or tomato juice. This is optional though.

The Mayo Clinic Diet or Grapefruit Diet

BREAKFAST: 1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice. 2 Eggs any style 2 Slices of bacon Black coffee or tea, no sugar

LUNCH: 1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice. Salad and or raw veggies (any dressing, {not low fat or fat free}) Meat (Cooked any way)

DINNER: 1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice. Meat (cooked any way) Vegetables (any green or red, may be cooked in butter or Seasoning or a salad as above) Black coffee or tea, no sugar

BEDTIME: (opt) 8oz Tomato juice or skim milk

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. At any meal you may eat until you are full, and you can not eat anymore. You must eat the minimum listed at each meal. 2. Do not eliminate anything from the diet, especially don't skip the bacon at breakfast or omit salads. It is the combination of foods that burn the fat. 3. The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process. 4. Cut down on coffee, it affects the insulin balance that hinders the burning process. Try to limit to one cup each meal. 5. Don't eat between meals, if you eat the combination of food suggested, you will not get hungry. 6. The diet may eliminate sugars and starches. Fat does not form fat, it helps burn it, so you can fry food in butter and use butter generously on vegetables. 7. Do not eat desserts, breads and white vegetables of sweet potatoes. You may double or triple helpings of meat, salads or vegetables. Eat till you are stuffed. The more you eat the more weight you will lose. 8. There may be no weight loss in the first 4 days, but you may lose 5 pounds on the 5th day. You may lose 1 and 1/2 pounds every two days until you reach your goal. 9. DRINK EIGHT 8oz GLASSES OF WATER EVERY DAY. 1/2 GALLON.

THIS DIET IS SAID TO BEEN GIVEN TO HEART PATIENTS NEEDING TO LOSE WEIGHT FAST FOR BY-PASS SURGERY.

ALL SOFT DRINKS NEED TO BE DIET AND CAFFEINE FREE.

YOU MAY NOT HAVE: White onions, potatoes, celery, peas, cereal, carrots, corn, starchy vegetables, bread, noodles, rice, potato chips, pretzels or fruit or diet dressing.

Hi Metris,

Grapefruit can react with certain medications including those for high blood pressure. If your doctor told you to stay away from it, then by all means do so. If not, check with your doctor before changing your diet.

Im diabetic - Will this diet hurt me? I have been told to not touch grapefruit.

Hi Gwyn,

That's a tall order. Most often, if you stick to a diet you may lose as much as 4-5 pounds the first week or two, but then it drops off to a pound or two a week. If you need to lose weight fast, you may want to consider a diet like the Medifast Diet designed by Doctors at John Hopkins to help heart patients lose weight fast.

You are right. Often people use the term fad diet in contempt of what they consider to be a poor weight loss diet. In reality, a fad diet is a weight-loss diet that becomes very popular for a time. Just because people label a diet as a "fad" does not necessarily mean the diet is a failure or unhealthy. But as you say a good diet should be balanced for good health and we do need a variety of foods to obtain the nutrients we need.

-- Contributed by: Donna Sundblad

I think that fad diets like this are unhealthy because you don't all the nutrients that you need. You should be able to eat a variety of foods so that you get all the nutrients you need.
