Hi Alma,

Not every tortilla is the same. When monitoring your carbohydrate intake to control blood sugar levels, it is important to read the nutritional information on the label. You should be able to eat them, but how much you eat will depend on the type and size of the tortillas.

Hi Lorenzo,

I understand where you're coming from. Even though Splenda is only one molecule away from a "recipe" for pesticide doctors do recommend it to diabetics.

You need to take out sugar free..... People get educated with sugar free it is poisonus to diabetic and regular people. They work with the pharmacutical co to rip on the profits in selling us drugs for diabetes..... No splenda or any artificial sweetner.......................

Hi Ethel,

Use a calorie calculator like the one available at The Diet Planner Search Engine found at Walford.com. You can purchase a digital food scale at Wal-Mart. The one I have weighs in oz. and grams. It's a process, but you have to teach yourself to be aware how many calories are in different foods.

Hello, my mother is 60 yrs old and was recently told by her doctor that she is borderline diabetic and she also has the food allergy ciliac sprue (allergic to wheat and gluten products)she has been struggling with her weight for 2 yrs now and has went from 125 pounds to 185 in the past two years. she gets moderate exercise doing farm work and horse riding and chores also walks a treadmill. can you please recommend a good diet for her, she eats the same foods all the time: corn tortilla, cooked ham slices, rice noodles, corn chips , potatoes, french fries, white rice ,beef and chicken and pork, she also has several helpings of vegtables each week, but not enough in my opinion. Can you list foods she can substitute the gluten items for and recommend a good healthy general meal plans or diets for her. She is very down now, the few foods she liked she was told to avoid now. Hi Mohammed,

When our bodies stop producing insulin or using it properly, this is known as diabetes. Insulin is an important hormone that helps our bodies to convert sugars, starches and any other foods we eat into energy. People who are overweight or people who don't exercise are at risk of developing diabetes but genetics also play a factor. Your health care provider can determine if you are pre-diabetic or have diabetes by conducting a Fasting Plasma Glucose Test or an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test.

Hi Ed,

According to the American Diabetes Association, sweet potatoes are actually used in controlling weight and for conditions like diabetes. They provide an easy way to take in heart healthy and cancer-fighting benefits even for diabetics.

Potatoes on the other hand and most refined starches have high Glycimic Index. Other high GI foods include:

  • Breakfast cereals
  • Breads
  • Crackers
  • Corn chips
  • White rice
  • White pasta

I don't see potato, including sweet potato. Can a diabetic eat these foods? Tks.

Hi again Lynette,

Remember, it's best to check with a health care provider when dieting. As for the print, if you go to "view" on your toolbar at the top of the page and move down to "text size" you can increase the size of the font to make it easier to read.

this is actually a list that she might find helpful also. I hope the print is not too small. But remind her to watch the salt/sodium content as well b/c of his blood pressure and CHF

Research suggests that artichokes are indeed good for diabetics to eat because they may help control blood sugar as well as lowering cholesterol. They are also a good source of fiber as well as potassium and magnesium.

If you have doubts about a particular food in your diabetic diet, ask your doctor.

what about artichokes, are they ok to eat ?
