I just wanted to say that i had belly fat and I wasn't proud of myself for having it at all. When I came across this and started to run and walk and switch to healthier eating, I lost 25 lbs in about a month! Now that my stomach is thinner, I'm a much happier person.

Hi Miatate,

One rule...well, it probably depends on who you talk to, but I'd say it has to do with eating sensible portions.

Hi Nicolina,

This is a common problem with dieting, and that's why so many diets claim to be "lifestyle" changes. The problem is, when we lose weight our minds often tell us now we can eat whatever we want...or as much as we want. The key to losing weight and keeping it off is to burn more calories than you eat. If you aren't very active, then you'll be able to he less calories than someone who is active. Take a look at how many calories you are eating. If you gain, lower it and eventually you'll find the right number for you to maintain your weight.

Hi Srimathi,

The fact that you've gained weight around the middle quickly leads me to suggest a visit to your doctor just to make sure there are no health related reasons for your weight gain. In general, gender plays a factor in how we store calories. I'm not sure of your age, but that figures into how your store fat too. Men have a tendency to store fat around their middle and women more commonly store fat in their hips and thighs until after menopause. Then due to hormonal changes they too start to put weight on around the middle.

Another thing that may be figuring in to your weight gain is stress. Studies have tied the development of abdominal fat to stress. This happens because during times of stress your body releases a hormone called cortisol. It seems that high levels of cortisol stimulate fat storage around the belly.

As for how to get rid of that stubborn belly fat, it is best to follow a healthy weight loss plan, combined with aerobic exercise and a stomach-toning workout. Losing fat on your belly takes time, but the effort is well worth it. Here are a few more articles you should find helpful:

Hi Hloni,

Often when we get into our 20's we become less active while we continue to eat as we did in our teens. If your weight gain has been fast and unexplained, you'll want to check with your doctor to rule out a medical reason for your belly bulge. Otherwise, changing to a healthier diet and increasing your level of exercise should bring that belly fat under control.

Hi Charlotte,

Along with exercises like crunches, you'll want to add exercises for the lower portion of the abs like reverse curls. Other exercises for the muscles that wrap around your waistline would be diagonal curls. Here are a few more exercises to help you in your quest for a flatter stomach after children:

  • Lie on your back, knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Rest your hands on your stomach, fingertips pointing toward your pubic bone. Exhale as you slowly lift your head and shoulders while pressing down and in with your fingers. This pressure encourages the paired muscle running vertically on each side of the anterior wall of the abdomen back together. While doing this exercise, keep your eyes focused on the ceiling a little behind you to help keep stress off your neck.
  • Wrap a bath towel around your torso with the ends in front. As you execute a crunch, pull the ends of the towel towards each other in front of your belly button to encourage the muscle back together.
  • Lie on your back, knees bent and feet flat on the floor. As you exhale, gradually extend one leg along the floor until you feel your abdomen contract below your belly button. Inhale when returning to the starting position and repeat with your other leg.

As with any exercise program, you'll want to check with your doctor or health care provider before you begin.
