Hi Sami,
Thanks for your input. When I do a cleansing fast, I do experience that increase in pre-diet energy levels after the first few days. Makes sense.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladThe energy decrease is not due to ketosis! It is due to your body using up all of its sugar stores and then converting your metabolism to burning its fat, coupled with sugar withdrawal symptoms. After a couple days (enough for your body to adjust and withdraw symptoms to subside)on the diet your energy levels will INCREASE to beyond pre-diet levels.

Thanks for your voice of reason. Balance and moderation are the key to a successful diet.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladYou have to remeber on atkins, that just because you can have, say, as much steak as you want, it is much smarter to instead replace the baked potatoe you would have previously had, with a large salad and only eat 1.5 steaks instead of 3. Dill pickles and pork skins can be your best friend on this diet. Lots and lots of water is good too.
-- Contributed by: RobHi Josh,
Yep, that's the kind of balance I'm talking about. Thanks for sharing.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladWhile high protein diets are mostly used for those of us who lift weights they still can be useful in any other diets. Protein outweighing fat is the sure fire way to go. Also it is protein that keeps you full longer, not fat. If you have a bit of hunger pang go eat a serving of fat free cottage cheese. Avi is right, protein does not turn into muscle. What it does is feeds your muscles after a workout. What happens is when you resistance train your muscles rip, amino acids and proteins help repair this and when these tears heal your muscle grows larger, thus adding muscle. Bottom line, take it easy on fat, eat complex carbs, and eat meat!
-- Contributed by: JoshHi Avi,
What I'm suggesting is a balanced diet. Many people who turn to high-protein diets aren't lifting weights, but just trying to lose weight. Protein is a necessary component to a healthy balanced diet.
Thanks for taking the time to comment Avi. Great to have you here.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladDonna, a high protein diet, is actually not necessarily any better than a higher fat diet. Now I don't how high protein you mean, but if you want your fat and protein intake to be equal, you need 2.25 times as much protein as the fat in a meal. But if you're talking about really high protein, as in like 20 grams protein, 6 grams fat, that's way too much protein. Fat makes you feel full longer, and extra protein won't turn into muscle, unless you're lifting heavy weights a lot. The body doesn't need more than 30 percent of it's calories from protein.
-- Contributed by: AviWell said, Josh. I totally agree.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladFirst off, sugars are a simple carbohydrate as are white flours and starches. Our bodies really do not need simple carbs, but we do need complex carbs, although in moderation. Next thing that a person should be aware of is the fat to protein ratio. A diet that is high in fats is just no good. It does not support a healthy cardiovascular system and just does not support health period. A high protein diet that is low in fat is the way to go. Simply this means when you eat something look at the nutritional guide and make sure that there is more protein than fat in the product and read the carb line. We don't want a lot of carbs, but we definitely DO want balanced whole grain carbs. Then there is the portions and amount of meals. Small meals 5 to 6 times a day helps us metabolize our food a lot easier. Lastly all of this HAS to be coupled with exercise! That is the most important. One needs both cardiovascular exercise and resistance training. Both exercises burn calories and help shape our minds, hearts and bodies.
-- Contributed by: JoshHi Akela,
You are so right. Plus some people don't realize that most carbohydrates turn to sugar in your body.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladThe headaches are also related to sugar withdrawls. (Feel free to research it, you should!) IT will take time to adjust, BUT YOU CAN DO IT! Wheres a support group for atkins folk?
-- Contributed by: AkelaHi leshh,
Headaches could be either from caffeine or carb withdrawal and will eventually go away.
-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladdone it for 3 days and already lost a few pounds...got a constant headache though
-- Contributed by: leshhHi Dalton,
I can relate to how you feel. Trying to keep weight under control takes constant effort and that's why a change in eating habits requires lifestyle changes. Many diets claim lifestyle changes, but only realistic healthy changes hold up over time.

-- Contributed by: daltonb wysakeHi Krysten,
Thanks for taking the time to share your weight loss success with us. I'd be interested to hear if you have maintained your weight loss. That seems to be the difficult part for most who do reach their weight loss goals.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI did the atkins diet for 6 months and lost 40 pounds. I would recommend it to anyone.
-- Contributed by: KrystenHi Valarie,
Many experts agree that this is not a heart healthy diet. Thanks for sharing your opinion here at LoveToKnow Diet.
-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladi will never try this diet because it sounds stupid, i preferd staying healthy than to starve myself,,
-- Contributed by: valerieHi Patty,
You've got a great start to reaching your weigh loss goals. The holiday season in wrought with dieting pitfalls, but if you plan ahead you can avoid them. Instead of planning to go off the diet and eat sweets that could start you backsliding, plan to bring a low carb dessert that you can eat and stay on your diet plan. And just to play it safe, don't attend holiday celebrations hungry and carry a low carb snack with you in case you need it.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi I have been on the Atkins diet for about 5 days now and already I have lost 5 pounds! I could have never did that without starving myself for at least two weeks. I can't believe it is really working. As for the constipation I take fiber sure it contains INULIN fiber . it is a plant fiber that does not get absorbed by your body it helps make your intestines rid stool easier. I take 3 heaping teaspoons a day and you can't even taste it ...it is amazing. you can put it in a glass of water and you cant even tell its in there! I thank God that I am on it for 5 days and not constipated I was so scared of that!! I eat better now, before I was slowely killing myself eating junk and sweets all day long...I was on the "C" diet...Candy, Cake,Cookies and Chocolate!! LOL I am sure my body is healthier now with green salads and fish, and lean meats. I would gladly eat a piece of cake for dinner or lunch. I didnt realize how addictted I was until now. I dont know if I will be able to always stay away from a piece of cake. But I know now that I cant have it everyday. maybe on the holidays???I hope. take care and God bless <>< Patty
