Hi Cal,

Alcohol is not allowed on the induction phase of the diet, but is allowed on the maintenance phase. I can't tell you how much you can drink, but instead what to consider when you decide whether or not to have a second drink. You see, alcohol is the first fuel your body will burn, and while that is happening you won't burn fat. You're body won't drop weight until the alcohol is burned. If you drink alcohol and stop losing weight, eliminate it from your diet.

Hi Maxine,

You are allowed to eat eggs "liberally" and prepared in many ways including:

  • scrambled
  • fried
  • poached
  • soft boiled
  • hard boiled
  • deviled
  • omelets

Hi

I'm just starting today on the diet. How many eggs are you allowed in a day please? Thanks.

Hi Uta,

To be sure, you can use a nutritional calculator to know for sure.

The thing to remember that even healthy foods have carbs and calories. We tend to think we can eat as much as we want because they are healthy...but if we take in more fuel that we burn we gain weight. If we take in the same about we burn, our weight stays the same. It is only when we take in less than we burn that we lose.

Hi, I am about to start the Atkins Diet, after talking to a "success story" at the pool today. However, now reading about the Atkins, my understanding was that I can eat all the cheese I want. Not so!Hmmm. Well, now my real question. I make a mean Caesar Dressing. Is that allowed on this Diet ? Egg, Olive Oil, lemon juice, anchovies, mustard and balsamic vinegar. Is that o.k.? I think it is, but than again, I think I eat healthy and can't understand that I can't get rid of my pounds....! Thanks for your help, Uta

Hi Charlotte,

Pinto beans are introduced in Phase 2. Legumes, like Pinto Beans, have a high carb count but a much lower "net carb" or "digestible carb" content.

Can you eat red (pinto) beans as protein on this diet?

Hi lmnsorbet,

When we think of low-carb we should really remember that not all carbs are the same. What should be taken into consideration is how the carbohydrate effects blood sugar. People use to think you could figure this out based on whether or not it was a simple or complex carbohydrate. Today we have learned that our choices should instead be based on the glycemic response. Glycemic response is influenced not only by which foods are eaten but also by:

  • how much is eaten
  • fiber content
  • fat content
  • the way the food is prepared

High glycemic carbohydrates like potatoes and rice enter the bloodstream fast and are best eaten during or after exercise. Low glycemic carbohydrates like apples, yogurt and kidney beans enter the bloodstream slowly and beneficial before exercise because they provide sustained energy.

Low-carb is good for a quick fix. As in... quickly losing those ten pounds you put on while on vacation. But I wouldn't recommend using it as a lifestyle diet.

Hi Snowy,

You are right. No carbs is not a good way to eat. This diet does allow low carbs which restricts the amount and which carbs are eaten to keep your body in ketosis.
