Caffeine is thought to affect blood sugar levels. You can learn more here:
Once you read these you'll probably not want to take your pills. However, for myself, I've learned to wean myself off caffeine before starting a diet because going cold turkey makes me really sick...headache and vomiting.

-- Contributed by: jeanetteHi Betty,
You'll want to avoid caffeine during the Induction Phase. Regular consumption of caffeine (addiction) can cause a drop in blood sugar which in turn leads to craving sweets.
I'm not 100 percent sure on Tofu, but have heard that it has knocked people out of Ketosis because it contains an amino acid profile for failure. However, you can follow a vegetarian form of Atkins. Does that answer your question?
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Donna, I have two questions today. Why no caffeine and can I have tofu? Thanks Donna.

My daughter-in-law followed the Atkins diet and lost 50 pounds. She really followed each phase though, without cheating.

-- Contributed by: heatehrHi Rochelle,
You don't have to buy specialty foods for this diet. You can shop at any grocery store to buy everything you need.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI just want to know if there is a list of stores or websites, where I can purchase the correct foods on the Atkins diet.
-- Contributed by: RochelleHi Shakiz,

I don't see it on the accepted food lists. Here's the nutritional info if that helps:
8 fl oz Buttermilk, cultured has:
- 11.7 Total carbs
- 0 Fiber
- 11.7 Net carbs
- 2.2 g. fat
- 8.1 Protein
- 99 Calories
Can I drink buttermilk?

Most fruits are restricted, but some fruit (other than watermelons and bananas) is allowed as long as it does not produce weight gains.
Some fruits allowed include:
- Cherries (not maraschino) (1/2 cup)
- Strawberries (3 large)
- Grapefruit (1/2)
- Cranberries (1/2 cup)
- Raspberries (1/2 cup)
In atkins diet, can we eat any kinds of fruits?
-- Contributed by: Moussa TalebHi Sonja,
That's a good question. The thing some people don't realize is that a plateau is part of losing weight--a temporary part. Plateaus can last 2-4 weeks, so be patient and keep eating right. If you want to try and break through the plateau a little sooner, you can try and beef up your exercise just a little. Whatever you do, don't fall into that trap of turning to food because you're depressed about your weight. Hang in there. It will pay off.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI had gastric bypass 4yrs ago and lost 140lbs, but now I'm feeling stuck! I really need to lose another 50-75lbs. wHEN I tried Atkins I could not get into ketosis. Is it my food or thr surgery?
-- Contributed by: Atkins and gastric surgeryHi James,
Diets that restrict carbohydrates intake, such as the Atkins diet, cause the body to go into ketosis. When the body is in ketosis, it excretes excess ketones in the urine and the breath causing the odor you're experiencing. Here are a couple more articles that will provide more information:

-- Contributed by: jamesHi Boss,
Hair loss can be diet related or may be the result of a medical condition. It is best to check with your doctor who knows your medical history. Nutritional deficiencies can promote increased hair loss by weakening hair shafts. This causes hair breakage and slow re-growth. If this is your problem then eating a healthy diet will correct the problem. The principal nutrients needed to promote healthy hair include: vitamin A, certain B vitamins, the vitamin biotin, vitamin C, copper, iron, zinc, protein, and water. The following list are foods that contain this elements:
- avocado
- beets
- brewerâs yeast
- broccoli
- chicken
- dairy foods
- eggs
- fish
- fish oil
- fortified cereals
- fortified milk
- foods fortified with vitamin A
- kidney
- leafy vegetables
- liver
- milk
- meat
- orange juice
- pork
- poultry
- soybeans
- wheat germ

-- Contributed by: michelleHi Nona,
Induction or phase 1 lasts 14 days. As you reduce carbs, your body will be prompted to use fat for fuel, resulting in weight loss from this fat-burning metabolism.
Acceptable foods include;
- Fish
- Fowl
- Shellfish
- Meat
- Eggs
- 3-4 oz. daily of cheese
- 12-15 net carbs a day of vegetables
- 8 oz. of pure or filtered water
Olive oil is allowed and considered particularly valuable. All other vegetable oils are allowed, the best being canola, walnut, soybean, grapeseed, sesame, sunflower and safflower oils, especially if they are labeled "cold-pressed" or "expeller-pressed."
Recommended beverages include
- Clear broth
- Club soda
- Cream (2-3 TBL per day)
- Decaffeinated or regular coffee
- Decaffeinated or regular tea
- Diet soda
- Herb tea
- Lemon or lime juice
I want a clear list of what to eat and what not to eat during the first fase
-- Contributed by: nonaFor a comprehensive list of foods, try getting one of the books written by Dr. Atkins. You can also get more information in the articles listed above.
Concerning mustard, plain or Dijon mustards are ok in moderation, but stear clear of honey mustard and other sweet varieties because they are higher in carbs.
