Hi TC,
There are a few diets out there that are rumored to have started as diets for heart patients, but it is not true. This is one of those diets.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladWhen I was introduced to this diet I was told that it was created to be used for heart patients who needed to quickly loose weight prior to surgery. It was not meant to be a fad diet or long-term diet. I tried the diet a few years back and after the first 3 days I lost 5 lbs. It helped me to jump start my weight loss, then I was able to focus on eating the right foods-more vegetables and fruits and water.
-- Contributed by: TCHi Lexi,
While this diet might be good for quick weight loss, it isn't the real answer to losing weight. I'm glad you don't plan to follow it long term because it isn't a balanced healthy plan.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI have tried this diet (well in away). I was 10 stone and I wanted to lose a bit of weight. Everyone said it would be a lot harder for me to lose it as I was only 10 stone and didn't have as much to lose. I only wanted to lose about half a stone so I felt more comfortable in myself so I joined slimming world. Nver really understood all the green and red days and am not a big meat fan so... after 2 days I just found myself eating tuna and sweetcorn!! and the day after and after... I also ate bananas and carrots(foods that were 0 sins or very low) and drank about 3 pints water a day along side about 15 black cups of tea with 1 sugar(sometimes half or none). After about 4 days I noticed the difference, not so much weight loss more not feeling bloated. I was also exercising on Wii Fit for about an hour and after about 2weeks ad lost about a stone but once i started eating again.....(which took about 2 weeks just to get used to other foods!!) I had put just less of what I had lost back on!! I am now back on this diet just until I go on my holidays in 12 days as it's the only I know where I can shift a stone quick. I would never go on this diet long term, but I would just for an occasion!!
-- Contributed by: Enter your name hereHi Darrell,
This is the pitfall of many diets. They help us lose weight but don't teach us how to keep the weight off. You might want to check in with your doctor and ask if he/she has a recommendation for a diet. Counting calories has helped me lose in the past, but still I gain it back when I quit counting. Now I'm trying to only eat when I am hungry. We'll see how it goes.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI have used this diet in the past and had the results that were expected. However when I could no longer keep up this pace, I put some of the weight back on. It has been about 15 years since I have used this diet. I started at around 260 lbs. I got down to 200. I felt weak and could not function the way I should. I am now back up to 235, better but I still need to loose some of the nearly 40 lbs I have gained back since using this diet. It works until you quit using it then look out, you will eat twice as much as before.
-- Contributed by: darrellHi Babycakes,
At least it is only a three day diet. Let us know if the results are worth it!
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI'M ON DAY 2 OF THE 3 DAY DIET AND THE TUNA IS REALLY KILLING ME. I HOPE THIS DIET IS WORTH IT BECAUSE I'M TRYING TO DROP SOME POUNDS BEFORE MY CRUISE. I'M CONSTANTLY HUNGRY AND CRAVING FOODS BUT I WILL STICK TO IT BECAUSE OF THE RESULTS PEOPLE ARE SEEING
-- Contributed by: BABYCAKESHi Queenbee,
Congratulations not only on your weight loss, but keeping it off. That's is amazing. The three day diet is, however, designed to be followed for three days. You are right, anyone planning on following the diet longer should talk with their doctor before starting.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience with us.
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI followed the 3day diet before and lost 65lbs., and kept it off. It really works if you stick to it. Get permission from your doctor before you start.
-- Contributed by: Enter your name hereHi Melissa,
When you eat the tuna, you're eating without any mayo or anything, right?
This is pretty extreme calorie restriction. How long do you plan to continue?
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI have been eating tuna for lunch the last 2 weeks and I have lost 10 lbs. I eat a 90 calorie breakfast bar in the morning, I get the bars at Walmart. Then for lunch I have a 50 calorie can of tuna with a veggie. Then dinner I have a normal meal which is some type of lean meat about 5-6oz with steamed or grilled veggies, or a small salad! 5/17/09
-- Contributed by: MelissaThat's great Melissa. Are you eating regular foods at your other two meals?
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI have been eating tuna for lunch the past 3 days and I have lost 2 lbs.!!
-- Contributed by: MelissaHi Tia,
You'll have to let us know how it goes. I'm staring the Lemonade Diet today, but it goes for 10 days. You can check out more at my Diet News blog or the Diet Forum where I'm going to track my progress. Are you doing it for just the three days?
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladi tried this diet last year and lost 8 pounds in the 3 days. I am starting again monday. good luck every one 5-2-09
-- Contributed by: tiaHi Jennifer,
Let us know the results! Did it work for you?
Donna
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI just started it to day I hope that it works for me!
-- Contributed by: JENNIFERHi Maram,
Thanks for stopping by to share your success with us. Did you keep the 10 pounds off or is this something you would recommend doing every few months or so?
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi, I once participated in this 3 day tuna diet and it did work wonderfully. I did loose the 10 lbs a week and I didn't really cut back on the other 4 days. I ate exactly what it said monday-wednesday, and what I wanted thursday-sunday. You could feel the difference in your metabolism.
-- Contributed by: Enter your name hereHi Teri,
I'll be interested in learning how much you lose. Be sure to check back in with us.
You can always visit our diet forums, too. Maybe start a discussion about this diet and see who else has tried it. Good luck.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladWell today is the first day. I hope it works; would love to lose 20lbs.
I will get back to you on day 3.
-- Contributed by: teriHi Rahz,
You are so right. Common sense is an important factor to successful dieting. Congratulations on your weight loss. You're feeling better and have lost weight. That's a great springboard to making lifestyle changes that last and make a difference long term.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI'm on day three and have not stuck completely to it, missed a juice here, had crackers instead of toast there, had a few Hershey kisses; and I've still loss 5lbs in my first two days. My eliminations are better and I feel good aside from a headache that goes away when I eat. I'm not cranky or feeling deprived. You really have to use common sense with this and anything else. DO what feels good to your body and moderation. Add in some well paced exercise (take a few additional steps when out, use the stairs,or ramps. Think healthier, more positive and just start making wiser choices after your first three days. If you fall off, just get right back on!
-- Contributed by: RahzHi James,
Congratulations on your weight loss. It sounds like you're taking a sensible approach, following the diet for three days and then resuming a healthy diet and active life. I hope others will follow your example! Thanks for sharing.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI have done this diet and lost 6kgs after finishing I do this diet on a regular basis and have gone from 120kgs to 86kgs I also workout and eat sensibly after finishing the diet. I have been on and off this diet for 6 months.
-- Contributed by: JamesHi Marie,
Yes, you should lose some weight. Remember this diet is really designed to be a shot term weight loss plan. While you follow it, it's a good idea to make a plan for how you will eat when you finish the three day diet so that you won't gain your weight back. Let us know how it goes!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHey. I haven't started this yet but I haven't eaten lunch yet. I'm going to do that with this diet. It's a great thing, and I can't wait to see my results! I ride my bike for forty minutes at 7.30 and home at 12.30 Monday, Tuesday , Wednesday, and Friday. So.. I might loose some weight!
-- Contributed by: Marie-LouiseThis tuna diet has been around for years!! I'm now 36 and my mom used to do this diet when I was a little girl (late 70's early 80's) but her diet was in Spanish.
-- Contributed by: ImSocherriHi Jennifer,
Congratulations on your weight loss. Remember that this is not a long-term diet, though, and that you should make a plan for what you'll do to maintain your weight loss once you finish the diet. With all that progress, you sure don't want to backtrack!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHey everybody, I just finished my first three days on this tuna diet, and let me tell you it works. I've lost 11 lbs and I feel great! Now that I am on my fourth day, I don't feel like having what I want, and now my stomach won't allow me to eat more than just a small portion. This is great! You should try it! But I will tell you, you need "will power".
-- Contributed by: jenniferHi Nicole,
This diet can work, but you don't want to follow it as a long term plan. You'll want to choose a more balanced plan.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladDude, this stuff works. I did it and it frekin works. It is not a bad diet. You get all your nutrition and everything dude.
-- Contributed by: nicoleHi Doc,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Extremely low calorie diets should only be followed under the guidance of your doctor. This particular diet is supposed to be a "3 Day" diet for a reason. To follow it for an extended period of time, your body will cannibalize your muscle tissue as it works to protect energy reserves.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI actually tired this diet for a period of 6 weeks and it worked rather well. I first started devoted and driven. I ate nothing but canned tuna for the 1st week and dropped 9 pounds easy. I then challenged myself by lowering my calorie in take to about 700 a day with no exercise. During the next 3 weeks I found myself losing weight rapidly. I was losing a constant 6-8 pounds a week but at a cost. I had sacrificed most daily activities just because they tired me out. By the end of the 4th week, I grew tired of the same bland taste of tuna and the variations I created to entertain my taste buds. So I introduced some other foods and raised my calorie intake to 1800 a day. I still found myself losing nearly 2 pounds a week with my newly revamped metabolism. By the sixth week I noticed that I had become fully derailed from my diet so I opted for my final weigh in. I had lost 36 pounds in 6 six weeks! Though feeling I had defeated fat, I realized that not all my lost weight was fat. I had lost a lot of muscle mass and body water. I had to pay for my impatient personality and hit the gym to regain what I had lost.
I would not recommend straining your body to the extent that I had, but only use the diet correctly in a well-thought out diet plan.
Hi Jess,
That's a substantial weight loss. You should be proud of yourself. While most of us scream about how unhealthy that is, a recent study shows that consuming a one-meal-per-day diet, rather than a traditional three-meal-per-day diet, is feasible for a short duration. You can read more about it here.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI wasn't aware of this diet but I lost around 70 pounds by not eating until 4PM(after school) and only eating tuna and then exercising. And still ate supper.
-- Contributed by: JessHi Mike,
Congratulations on your weight loss. I guess you would be excited. Now the key is not to gain it back as you transition back to eating a balanced diet.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladSay whatever you want about the diet. All I know is I lost 30 pounds in 4 weeks, and I couldn't be happier. This diet complemented with a good workout plan will give you amazing results.
-- Contributed by: MikeHi Melissa,
I can see merit in using this diet in the short term, but the weight loss is not due to a chemical reaction but rather in the reduced caloric intake.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI know you are right for the long term, but I disagree with the way you are completely trashing this diet. I did this about 6 years ago and yes you are kinda hungry the first 3 days then the remainder 4 days of this 7 day diet you are calorie counting and yes the results are amazing. It claimed to be making a chemical reaction in your body and by the end of the seventh day you'd drop a bunch of weight. That's exactly what hapened to me. I dropped 14 pounds though. I don't recommend doing it consistently, it's just something to help you over the edge to your goal..and yes I kept it off afterwards no problems. in the end it's best to make healthy eating decisions and exercise, but sometimes you need that extra encouragement of a fad diet every once in a while to make you drop some pounds quickly.
-- Contributed by: MelissaHi Mad Dog,
While losing weight fast is not the recommended way to achieve long-term weight loss, you're right. It's what everyone wants.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladThis diet works for most people who want to lose weight fast. I'm a personal trainer. Every one I know wants to drop weight fast. This article is good helped me.
-- Contributed by: mad dogHi Mary,
Any diet that centers around one food is really considered a fad diet, and while it may work initially, over the long term it doesn't teach us to change our eating and because of that the weight comes back on. You are so right. Good foods and no junk.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladAbout 10 years ago I tried the 3-day tuna diet and lost seven pounds. I have used this diet several times since when I wanted to lose pounds fast. However, I turned against tuna and haven't been able to use it in long time. Of course, any long term weight loss has to be a change in eating habits to good foods for our body and no junk.
-- Contributed by: MARY SNOWHi Brandi,
Thanks for sharing your testimony with our readers here at LoveToKnow Diet. You bring up an important issue that applies to any successful weight loss plan. Once you lose the weight, it takes discipline and making the right healthy choices to keep those pounds off.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI used this diet before going into the military and it does work in fact I lost 50 pounds in 6 wks! The problem is though you may have the discipline to use it, its the days that you decide you dont need it anymore and dont learn to eat properly that get you back into the weight gain issues that you had before. This diet does work though and as long as you have support when you stop it to continue eating right the weight will stay off!
-- Contributed by: brandiHi MJ,
Thanks so much for stopping by here at LoveToKnow Diet to share your success and to encourage others. We appreciate it!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladActually I am on this diet now and have been for almost a month now. I eat tuna twice a day and a weight loss shake for breakfast. I have been losing about 2kg each week and it is easy to keep up if you add things to the tuna like an egg or herbs. Anything but carbs, that is. My brother has lost 10kg in a month. We were both average weight to begin with and after the first few days started to enjoy the feeling off not being bloated. When I am hungry I'll just have a Sustagen shake. So here is a testimony - it works if you have discipline. Just think it took you how long to put on weight and you expect it off in 3 days? Doesn't work that way, you need to incorporate it into an eating plan for awhile until it all comes off.
-- Contributed by: MJHi Tasha,
You are so right. In fact, that's one of the problems with fad diets centered around one kind of food. By the time most people finish the diet they are SOOO ready to eat something else. If they aren't careful they quickly pile the weight back on and many times a little extra because the diet didn't teach them how to change their eating behaviors, it only caged them for awhile.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI tried the diet for 2 weeks and lost about 10 lbs during the time. I was told that if you drink lots of water during the diet you lose more. (water weight of course) I think the diet is good for a quick boost, but as with all diets, if you go back to your old habits, you back to your old weight.
-- Contributed by: tashaHi Mandy,
I've heard this same report from others. Were you able to keep your weight off once you went off the diet?
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI've done this diet. It was given to me by and Army Officer to help me drop off the last bit of weight I needed to lose to join the Army... It really works, but it is not a three day fix. I saw awsome results and I was on it for almost three months.
-- Contributed by: mandyHi unknown,
Sorry to hear this diet didn't work for you. Your best bet is to eat a healthy balanced diet, exercise and to steer clear of fads if you want to see long term results.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladTHIS DIET DOES NOT WORK!!!!!
-- Contributed by: unknownHi Alexis,
You can find a variety of good weight loss plans out there. You don't say how much you want or need to lose, but losing one to two pounds a week is realistic if you eat right and exercise. Here are a few links that give you a variety of possibilities:
-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladi'm trying to lose weight and i want to lose it by june 13 please sends me information about a good way to lose it.
-- Contributed by: alexisHi Suad,
You see everything allowed in this article. Sorry to say, but wine is not on the list. But this is recommended as a 3-day diet only.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Luana,
Thanks for taking the time to let us know about your past endeavor to follow this diet, why it failed and where your are today and the changes you've made to establish healthy eating and weight loss habits. We'll look forward to hearing how much you lose by your 34th birthday! Good luck.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladCan I have wine with my tuna diet?
-- Contributed by: suadHi all, Well about 10 years ago myself and 3 of my sisters went on this diet, I wasn't able to stick with it, NO WILL POWER!!(was out by day 2, couldnt stop eating my sweets) 2 of the 4 of us lost the weight, but didnt keep it off for long, I think my sisters over did the 4 days they could eat regular food, and after they ended the diet they binged like crazy. But now my mom and I are giving it another try, this time I am sticking with it. and I have added walking 2 miles a day with the program. Personally I hate coffee, but it seems to work better than tea. I LOVE all the veggies and just use sea salt and pepper for seasonings. Day 2 of week 2 and already see my pants drooping a bit. So hopefully by the time I turn 34 in May I will be atleast 40 pounds lighter. will keep ya all updated
-- Contributed by: LuanaHi Tuna,
We appreciate your input. It's always good to hear success stories from those who have tried the diet.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI have done this diet a couple of times, and it has worked great.
-- Contributed by: TunaThanks for the tips, Jack. Sounds like you've found success in losing weight.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHi Sandy,
The sample above is an example of the menu to be followed each day.
-- Contributed by: Donna Sundbladif you want to lose the weight and are able to stick with it the tuna diet works. 3 cans of tuna a day and drink only water. no mayo, if need to add sauce use either hott sauce or bbq. it sucks but if your desperate to lose that quick 10lbs, you have to stick with it
-- Contributed by: JACK BAUERHow do i get the rest of the tuna diet they only show day 1?
-- Contributed by: sandyHi Susan,
Congratulations on your weight loss! It's always good to know where a diet comes from before following it and to check with your doctor to make sure it's healthy. If you had, he probably would have told you that other foods were permitted. But even though you are sick of tuna, you can enjoy the new your 90 pounds lighter!
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI was on the diet. I was told it was the Mayo-Clinic diet used for heart patients when they need to lose weight fast before surgery. Who would have guessed it wasn't. But I lost 90 lbs on it. I was hungry during the day, but quite full at dinner time. I never felt sluggish. I actually felt quite good. I lost 6 lbs the first week, but suspect that was mostly water. It took me 1 year to lose the weight taking two months off, one during the summer and one during the holidays. That's a total of 90 lbs in 10 months. I did get sick of tuna, but it was my understanding that the tuna and all the days foods were chemically balanced and not to sway from them. I wish I'd known I could have something besides tuna. I can't stand the site of it now. Ha ha ha.
-- Contributed by: SusanHi Carolyn,
You don't prepare the tuna, you eat it as it is.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladHow do you prepare the tuna?
-- Contributed by: CarolynHi Kim,
Thanks for sharing your personal testimony. It seems that you approach this diet with common sense, and as a learning experience to train you to better understand portion control as reflected to only eating half portions of high calorie foods on your 4 days off. I'd be curious to know if your weight stayed off.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI have also tried this diet and have been off and on it for several months. It did work for me, I lost 7 lbs the first week. But I didnt give up the creamer in my coffee, I just cut back and I didn't do the egg I did peanut butter instead. The thing I found by doing this diet was it helped me gage my food intake. As we all know the servings you get these days eating out are TOO much. This diet helped me get back on track with my portions. I also think that if your eating over your limit of calories this diet helps you jump start eating the right amount. After a month of doing the diet (my way) I had lost 20 lbs. On the 4 days off I tried to stay on the healthy side of food and if I wanted something that was high in calories I would only eat half. ks
-- Contributed by: KimThank you for sharing your experiences with our readers.
-- Contributed by: Kathleen Robertsi have tryed this diet before but it was called a 3 day diet. You can lose 10 lb in 3 days if you follow the diet plan, and of course you go back to eating normal for 4 days and you can do this for up to a month at a time. The only fall back is that if you are Diebetic you can't follow through with this as for your glycemic levels will drop and you can become ill. This was introduced to me as a form of weight loss for people who are having surgery done and need to lose weight quicky. So if you do try this diet be advised that you may encounter times of low blood suger or weakness. -- EJE
-- Contributed by: ERINI have tryed this diet and it will work, If you follow it. However I was unable to do so at the time. I was working around heat and bacame to weak and unstable, so I had to get something to eat on the third day, but I did loose four pounds with in that time and I did not follow it to the tee. I do not like carrots and had to replace them with more green beans. I have lost my paper on thei and have been loking for it , because I am going to go back on it. I think that I can stay with it now because I am not working. So, for any one wanting to try it, I would suggest not to try it if working around a lot of heat. And drink a lot of water.----JK
