From LoveToKnow Diet
Women's health and nutrition go hand-in-hand. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle includes managing your diet and getting plenty of exercise. We'll give your some important reasons why you should and some suggestions for getting started on the road to good health and nutrition today! Keep reading!
Why Should You Take Care of Yourself?
Well of course the reasons for taking care of yourself are simple. You want to live a longer life, right? On top of that, you want to be around to take care of your family for as long as possible. Your body can't do it alone. You have to change your way of thinking. For many women who are overweight, out of shape, and/or in poor health, thoughts of change are overwhelming and intimidating. Where should you begin? Nothing ever seems to work. You just can't change your lifestyle. These are common complaints among women in regards to diet and fitness. Reality shows like The Biggest Loser seem almost unrealistic, although inspiring, at times. Can that really happen? What can women do who don't have access to personal trainers or plenty of time to exercise?
Make Dietary Changes
That's right. Simply changing the way you eat is one of the best ways to begin the journey back to good health. There are many weight loss programs to help you achieve your goals, such as the following:
Before you begin changing the way you eat, however, you should consult your doctor. She will need to give you a physical and check your body mass before recommending a weight loss plan that will be suitable. Overall dietary changes include the following:
- Monitoring portion sizes-You may be surprised to discover just what an appropriate serving size is for you!
- Changing what you put into your body-Women's health and nutrition depend upon what they put into their bodies. Focus on foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole wheat breads and cereals. In addition, add protein from fish and chicken. Steer clear of processed sugars, excess starches, and foods made with white flour.
Fitness is Important
Physical activity is just as important as good nutrition as you coax your body into good health. You don't have to be a tri-athlete to get your body into good condition. You do have to incorporate exercise into your daily schedule, but it is easier than you think. Walking is one of the easiest and most beneficial types of exercise that is appropriate for virtually any age. Swimming is another low-impact exercise that works well for many women.
Nutrition and Pregnancy
One of the most important times in a woman’s life is during pregnancy. Nutrition is a focal point throughout the nine months a woman carries her child and continues to be important after labor and delivery. With health issues such as gestational diabetes always present, however, nutrition plays a key role in a successful and healthy pregnancy. Women who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes typically meet with a dietician and are given a diet to follow. Sugars and carbohydrates are limited, while fruits, vegetables, protein-rich foods, and whole wheat breads and cereals are encouraged. Calorie intake is just as important, and while a pregnant woman isn’t exactly eating for two, she should have a larger calorie intake during the pregnancy. Those calories should come from specific food groups, however.
Nutrition and Menopause
It’s no secret that metabolism changes with the influx of menopause. Portion control plays a huge role in a menopause diet, and calcium needs are typically increased as well. Nutrition remains critical to a woman’s overall health, as does exercise. Your doctor and a registered dietician can help you incorporate foods that boost your metabolism into your daily diet.
