Basics of A Vegan Detox Diet

First it’s helpful to explain the meanings of various words:

What does it mean to detox your body via diet?: When someone attempts to detoxify their body via a detox diet plan, it means that they’re striving to rid their body of certain toxins or other contaminants. Research shows that people consume many unhealthy chemicals and toxins, like pesticides from the foods they eat. So in theory a detox diet plan might eliminate these toxins, thus clearing the body of them.

What is a vegan diet?: A vegan diet is one in which an individual consumes no animal products. Unlike vegetarians who will eat eggs or dairy, vegan diets have no animal components, not even a product that comes from an animal like milk. Some vegan diets are influenced by an individual’s preference for plant based foods, some for ethical reasons, and others for the health benefits. Some vegans are extreme not even eating honey (it comes from bees) others are not so extreme. A carefully planned vegan diet is perfectly safe and tends to be very healthy. Vegans just need to watch their protein and other vitamin levels.

If you put vegan and detox together you end up with a vegan detox diet.

How A Detoxifying Vegan Diet Works

Some might argue that there is no such thing as a stand-alone detoxifying vegan diet plan. If you eat vegan you simply eat vegan style, and you’re likely benefiting from the natural detoxifying benefits that a vegan diet provides. Another idea behind a vegan detox diet is that you normally do not eat as a vegan does, but once in a while you follow a vegan diet in order to detox.

What you might eat on a vegan detoxifying diet plan:

  • Of course you’ll eat plenty of plant-based food items.
  • Aim for all or mostly all organic foods.
  • Some people only eat raw foods, such as on a vegan raw food detox diet.
  • No processed food items; even plant based processed foods.
  • Lots of water and pure veggie and fruit juices.
  • Limited sugar, salt, oils, and other unnecessary food additives.

There are several different ways to eat in a detoxifying and vegan manner. It’s a good idea to see which types of plans are available in order to find the best detox diet suited to your needs.

The following books offer some ideas about different levels of vegan diet plans.

How long a detox diet like this lasts:

Technically a detox diet, vegan or otherwise can last as long as you see fit, and as long as it’s healthy for you to follow. Some people set a specific length of of time; say three days. Others follow a detox diet one day each week, while some follow a detox diet until their bodies feel better, or they feel the need to detox is over.

Safety Tips for Detox Diets

No matter the length of time you follow a detox diet plan; there are some safety precautions you should follow.

  1. Before making a major diet change always talk with your doctor or other health care professional. A detox diet can be safe; it can also be unhealthy if you don’t know what you’re doing. A health care provider can help you plan a healthy detox.
  2. Follow your vitamin intake carefully, it’s easy for vegans to miss important nutrients.
  3. If you feel unhealthy on a vegan detox diet – or any diet plan for that matter, you should talk to your doctor and try another eating plan. Not all diets are suitable for all bodies.

It’s also good to know: Many health professionals note that clean water is just as detoxifying as any special detox diet. You may be able to gain the same health benefits by drinking your eight glasses of good old water a day as you gain from a complicated detox diet.

Hi Anand,

Some people think that eating Vegan will clearly help them lose weight. It can, but it still depends on the amount of calories you're eating. Indian foods are often high in oil which really packs the calories in.

Try to limit:

  • sugar
  • salt
  • oils

This will help bring your calorie count down. The key is to burn more calories than you eat if you want to lose weight.

I have been a vegan all my life. I am 33. I have milk very very rarely - when I can't get black tea.

Here is the problem - I am grossly overweight! I love Indian veg food, and choice and variety are never a problem. I have stopped white rice and only eat red rice and hand pound the wheat myself for bread. Still 33Kilos overweight.

Man - some people like me a are just born fat.
