The Raw 50

From LoveToKnow Diet

If you are interested in the health benefits of the raw food diet or lifestyle, check out The Raw 50, the follow-up to supermodel Carol Alt's acclaimed book, Eating in the Raw.

Carol Alt and Raw Food

Carol Alt became a model in 1980 and appeared on the cover of Sport's Illustrated's swimsuit issue in 1982. Known as "the face," Alt appeared flawless from the outside, but she says she was plagued by health complaints both minor and major. By the time she reached 34, her health problems had escalated. Among other things, she suffered from:

  • Sinus infections
  • Indigestion
  • Allergies
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Moodiness
  • Dry, itchy skin

By luck, Alt heard about the raw food lifestyle and changed her eating habits overnight. Almost instantly, she noticed improvements in her mood and her weight dropped. Over time, she saw improvements in her other health problems, too.

Now she spreads the word about the raw food diet through her Raw Nutrition website and her books.

The Raw 50: Raw Cookbook for Beginners

After a while on the raw food diet, Alt became bored with it. After all, there are only so many ways to make salad! Soon, though, she realized that there are many more foods you can eat on a raw food diet.

In The Raw 50, she shares 50 of her favorite raw food recipes, broken down like this:

  • 10 breakfasts
  • 10 lunches
  • 10 dinners
  • 10 snacks
  • 10 beverages

The recipes in the book are designed to be fast and easy, even for those new to the lifestyle. In fact, many reviews on Amazon.com say this is the ideal cookbook for raw food novices. A few recipe highlights include:

  • Red Beet Ravioli
  • Vanilla Avocado Milk
  • Raw Pizza
  • Frozen Watermelon Cheesecake

Other Features

Although the recipes are the main focus of Alt's latest book, they are far from the only important component. Readers will also find helpful information about tools and appliances needed for raw food "cooking". Stories about other raw foodies inspire newbies and illustrate raw food health benefits.

Eating in the Raw

Carol's first book

If you are new to or considering the raw lifestyle, consider purchasing Carol's first book, Eating in the Raw. Billing itself as a beginner's guide to the raw lifestyle, this book covers such topics as:

  • Health benefits
  • Easily integrating raw food into your life
  • Distinguishing raw from non-raw food (it's more complicated than it sounds!)
  • How you can eat meat on a raw diet
  • Maintaining raw in restaurants
