Subway Diet
From LoveToKnow Diet
There probably is not a person on the planet who hasn't heard of Jared Fogle or the Subway diet that allowed him to shed a tremendous amount of weight in a relatively short period of time. But is the diet for real or just another fad diet, and is it healthy for you?
Is the Subway Diet a Fad Diet
The Subway Diet could easily be considered a fad diet. It has been reported on the television through numerous ads and spokespeople without having any real facts behind it to support the claims that it works. Various websites are also dedicated to the Subway Diet and several books on the subject do give detailed information and insight on the diet itself.
The diet, while following some fad-like tendencies, is based on fact. The company, however, does not endorse the Subway Diet. Subway's company dietician stated that she would have rather seen Jared eat a nice breakfast followed by fruits and vegetables throughout the day to balance his diet. The company also dislikes calling it the “Subway Diet” as they refer to it in their literature as the “Jared Diet”.
Losing weight on the Subway Diet is possible. It is based on nutritional facts and not conjecture. That alone makes the diet a real diet and not just a celebrity or company driven fad diet. Other diets like the Zone or Atkins have you ignoring vital foods that allow your body to function properly.
What to do on the Subway Diet
There is no need to go and purchase books on the Subway Diet. The methodology is simple and straight forward. Follow the rules below in order to make the Subway Diet is a successful one for you:
- Eat two six inch Subway subs a day for four weeks to see a reduction in weight. Limit your choices to the following:
- Wheat bread
- No mayonnaise or other condiments needed but if you choose to have some then a low-calorie choice like light mayo and mustard or oil and vinegar (light) are smarter choices
- Load up on the veggies because you can never have enough and you will feel fuller
- Cheese is always optional and your body needs a little fat and oil to function and the cheese on a subway hoagie is minimal equalling about one slice of cheese
- Choose ham, turkey or grilled chicken as these meat choices offer a good source of much needed protein making them the best choices for your hoagie
- Drink plenty of water – at least 8, 8 ounce glasses a day or more if you can
- Exercise daily as that is what Jared did - walked to and from his local Subway – and you can do the same if one is close enough. Otherwise join a gym, do aerobics in your home or just go for a walk.
The Subway Diet is simplistic. There are obvious avoidances. Don’t each sweets or foods high in fat. Avoid the chips and cookies you can get at the Subway. They now offer healthier choices like apples and raisins. If your sweet tooth is screaming for a fix consider one of those two items.
Why Does the Subway Diet Work
The diet is based on simple weight loss principles of calories in vs. calories out. Your body requires a certain number of calories in order to maintain your current weight. Once you know how much you weigh, you can figure out how many calories on average you consume during the day in order to stay at that weight. Eating less than that number will see you losing weight. Adding exercise means you will lose even more weight and tone your body as well.
Jared’s actual diet consisted of 1 6” turkey sub with no oil, cheese or mayo and a bag of chips for lunch and a 12” veggie sub with extra vegetables for dinner. He also walked to and from the Subway. This constituted roughly a 1000 calorie diet. Portion control also played a large part in Jared’s weight loss. He limited himself to those two subs each day for a year. This allowed him to lose over 225 pounds.
