What is Low Carb?

If you've investigated types of weight loss programs, you've probably run across the words "low carb". There are low carbs frozen dinners, low carb snacks, low carb recipes, and low carb desserts. But with all this information and products, do you know what "low carb" is really all about? Some people confuse low carb diets with low fat diets, but these aren't necessarily the same. For diabetics, low carb eating is simply a must-do way of life. Women who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes are often placed on a very low carb diet as well. Even if you haven't been diagnosed with any type of health problems, a low carb diet can be a healthy way to lose weight and keep the weight off as well. A sample low carb diet typically suggests that you consume no more than 20 to 45 grams of carbohydrates per day. To follow this regimen, you'll need to stay away from sugar and white flour and carve out a diet of specific food choices.

  • Any breads and cereals you eat should be whole grain.
  • Even certain vegetables are higher in carbs, such as potatoes and corn. Green vegetables make better food choices.
  • Watch your choice of fruits as well, because fruits like bananas have almost twice the carbs of oranges.
  • Chicken, fish, and lean meats are also good food choices.
  • Drink lots of water, but go easy on the caffeine which can stimulate the release of insulin.
  • Watch your alcohol intake as well. Alcohol also stimulates insulin, and your body will spend more time burning the alcohol rather than the fat.

Depending upon the sample low carb diet you choose, you could find yourself losing weight the very first week. Don't get discouraged if the weight doesn't instantly come off, however. Dieting in itself will help control your weight, but there are other steps you can take to improve your weight loss success and your health.

  • Drink lots of water every day to flush out your system, produce more energy, lubricate your joints, maintain your body's temperature, and more.
  • Find time to rest and relax. Look for stress-free moments. These could include a long, hot bath or just a few minutes of meditation. Try to find at least 30 minutes of stress-free time every day.
  • De-clutter your surroundings. That's right. If you can carve out some neat spaces in your home, your work place, etc. you'll feel less stress as well. Get organized and feel satisfied.
  • Exercise every day. This is the single most important thing you can do in addition to any diet you try. If you get bored with doing the same exercise every day, try some different types of exercise, such as yoga, Pilates, swimming, etc.

Finally, before trying any diet, talk with your doctor about what lifestyle choices and diet changes you need to make.
