Lemonade Cleansing Diet
From LoveToKnow Diet
The Lemonade Cleansing Diet is known by a number of names including the Master Cleanse Diet, originated by Stanley Burroughs, and the Lemonade Diet.
Designed for Cleansing
Stanley Burroughs created the Master Cleanse Diet in 1940. He was a strict vegetarian with an interest in alternative health practices. By 1976, he promoted the lemonade diet as a tool for those who wanted to lose weight, but he also claimed a host of health benefits and increased energy for those who followed the cleanse guidelines.
Burrough's original book was poorly organized, and for many difficult to follow. In 2004, Peter Glickman published an easier-to-understand version of the booklet, titled Lose Weight, Have More energy and Be Happy in 10 Days. As a result, the diet surged to new popularity. Today many of the people who express an interest in the diet, are looking for a way to lose weight fast, and while this is one aspect of the diet Burroughs promoted, he also talked of how it worked to detoxify the body.
How to Follow the Lemonade Cleansing Diet
How long you stay on this diet will be up to you, but it is recommended that you follow it for at least 10 days and no more than 40 days. The only thing you consume during this cleanse is the lemonade mixture. Herbal laxative tea and salt water are also used:
- Salt Water: A quart of salt water (2 teaspoons non-iodized sea salt) is drunk first thing upon waking. This is known as the salt water flush and will move through you quickly, so stay near the bathroom.
- Herbal Laxative Tea: Herbal laxative tea is taken at night before bed.
- Lemonade: The lemonade mixture is the only thing consumed throughout the day, although herbal tea and water are also allowed. Plan to drink 6-12 glasses of lemonade each day. Each glass contains around 110 calories.
How to Make Lemon Cayenne Pepper Detox Drink
The lemonade mixture works as a detoxifying agent to cleanse the body of toxins, but it also helps people to lose weight. The lemonade is made up of four basic ingredients.
Recipe for a Single Serving of Lemonade
- 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice – organic is best.
- 2 tablespoons Grade B organic maple syrup
- 1/10 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 10 ounces of pure water
While you may be tempted to mix up a batch of lemonade for the entire day, it is important to note that the longer the cayenne pepper steeps, the spicier the drink becomes. If you must make up a batch to bring with you, or decide it will be more convenient, don't add the cayenne pepper until just before drinking.
Cayenne Pepper, Water, Lemon, Maple Syrup
While the lemonade drink for this cleanse is uncomplicated and inexpensive, people often want to make changes to the four basic ingredients. When Stanley Burroughs first invented the Master Cleanse Diet, he chose the ingredients for specific reasons so don't make substitutes if you want the best results.
- Lemon – Fresh squeezed is recommended as processed juice negates the majority of the benefits derived from the Lemonade Cleansing Diet.
- Grade B maple syrup – You will probably have the best success finding this at your local health food store or online.
- Cayenne pepper – This is the ingredient many people want to leave out. If you're tempted to drop it from the ingredients, don't. It plays an important role in loosening mucus and improving blood flow. Plus, it provides vitamins B and C. If you really hate the taste, try drinking your lemonade through a straw.
No Scientific Evidence to Back Up Claims
It's important to note that even though Stanley Burrough's claimed his diet cleansed the system of toxins and helped people regain their health, there is no scientific evidence that backs up his claims. On the other side of the coin, there are people all over the world who claim that they have experienced health benefits and lost weight using this diet..

Hi Shay,
Congratulations. I'm on day 8 right now and have currently lost five pounds. I'm thrilled with that. I am looking forward to eating again, but this is a much easier thing to do than you'd expect once you set your mind to it.

I did answer your other comment, but let me say again that one or two glasses in not enough. If she can't drink more, I would suggest she find another cleanse to do. While the Master Cleanse does help many people lose weight, its real purpose is to detoxify your body. If you're girlfriend is only drinking one or two glasses of the lemonade mixture, she may cause her metabolism to slow down as it kicks into survival mode because it thinks she is starving.
