Hallelujah Diet
From LoveToKnow Diet
According to its creator, Reverend George Malkmus, the Hallelujah Diet is God's way to finding ultimate health.
The Beginning
The Hallelujah Diet was created by the Reverend George Malkmus. While his goal, of course, was to find a healthier way to eat, his motivation was much stronger. In 1976, Malkmus was diagnosed with colon cancer. He had already watched his mother die from the disease, and he wanted to find an alternative to the chemotherapy and radiation treatments that she had endured. Malkmus was already a successful pastor of a large congregation in New York, and he used his evangelical contacts to reach out to Lester Roloff, an evangelist in Texas. Roloff urged Malkmus to change his regular diet to one of raw vegetables and fruits and to drink lots of carrot juice.
As Malkmus began to experience improvement in his health, he searched for more guidance from the Bible, and by 1977, his tumor had disappeared. He immediately set out to spread the word and referred to his rejoicing as his "hallelujah". By 1988, Malkmus had purchased a fifty acre farm in Eidson, Tennessee, and began what was to become his new ministry, Hallelujah Acres. In 1992, Malkmus married Rhonda Jean, a woman who had entered into his program suffering from arthritis. After changing her diet, Rhonda Jean lost over 80 pounds and her arthritic symptoms disappeared. Together Malkmus and Rhonda seek to reach others through seminars, books, newsletters, and media appearances.
What is the Hallelujah Diet?
Just what is the Hallelujah diet? Rev. Malkmus points out that food has an incredible power. It has the ability to create and nourish, and it also has the ability to destroy our health. This Bible based diet is actually quite simple. It basically follows an 85 percent and 15 percent ratio. You should eat 85 percent raw foods and 15 percent cooked foods. The cooked foods are typically eaten only at the end of the day following a raw food supper. Breakfast usually consists of juice, such as barley juice. Lunch would follow and consist of a vegetable salad with some fruit as well. Supper would also be a salad with the cooked food added after. Carrot juice is encouraged as a between meal snack.
The 85 Percent Foods
The foods that make up 85 percent of the diet are considered raw, natural foods that are also unprocessed. In other words, you would eat foods that are as close to their original state as possible.
- Beverages-Throw out the soda. The Hallelujah Diet calls for natural vegetable juices and distilled water.
- Dairy-You won't guzzle whole milk on this diet either. Instead, look for banana milk, almond milk or fruit creams.
- Fruit-The fruit you eat should make up no more than 15 percent of the 85 percent of raw foods. This includes fruit juice and organic dried fruits as well.
- Grains and Nuts-Grains such as dehydrated granola, crackers, and soaked oats work well, and nuts include walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, and macadamia nuts.
- Vegetables-All raw vegetables are permissible on this diet.
- Oils-Choose flax seed oil and extra virgin oil.
- Sweets-Bet you thought you wouldn't see this word on this diet, right? Well, there are some sweets that are allowed, and they include fruit smoothies and raw fruit pies.
The 15 Percent Foods
Now that you understand what makes up the bulk of this diet, here's the other 15 percent:
- Beverages-Beverages include caffeine-free herb teas, organic juices, and cereal coffees.
- Dairy-While there are some dairy products that are acceptable, they should be eaten in small amounts. They include organic butter, rice milk, and non-dairy cheeses.
- Fruit-Fruits can include those that are stewed and unsweetened.
- Grains-You actually have a nice selection of grains, including whole grain breads, pastas, and brown rice.
- Vegetables-Cooked vegetable choices include baked white and sweet potatoes, steamed vegetables, and frozen vegetables.
