If you search online, you will find dozens of offers for amazing diet patches with incredible claims of swift, painless weight loss. Are these patches safe? Can a diet patch really help you lose weight quickly?

The Premise

The idea behind all of the diet patch offers is that a skin patch that delivers a combination of herbal or chemical ingredients will help a person lose weight, in much the same way as the nicotine patch helps smokers quit. These patches generally claim to suppress appetite or speed up the metabolism.

What's in the Diet Patch?

Most of them contain the same ingredients as over-the-counter diet products. There is a Hoodia patch, for example. Other ingredients include DHEA, ephedrine, flaxseed oil, fucus vesiculosus, guarana, 5-HTP, L-Carnitine, lecithin, yerba mate, zinc citrate, and zinc pyruvate. Some of these ingredients are known appetite suppressants; others are known to have effects on metabolism.

Is It Safe?

Most of the ingredients in diet patches are herbs or amino acids that are generally considered to be safe. However, persons who are taking medications or who have certain health conditions should ask their physician to monitor their use to prevent serious health problems from developing due to drug interactions.

Does It Work?

While there are hundreds of anecdotal accounts of people losing significant amounts of weight while using a diet patch, there has been no clinical research to substantiate these claims. Furthermore, some state legal systems have successfully prosecuted various marketers and manufacturers for false advertising.

Recommendations

While the patch is tempting, with its claims to make weight loss quick, easy, and painless, the fact is there is no miracle anything that can render losing weight quick or easy -- and any weight you do lose on a "miracle plan" is certain to be regained once the miracle program is discontinued. Rather than risk hard-earned money on an uncertainty like a miracle diet patch, invest in healthy foods and exercise. Those two factors have been clinically proven to reliably influence weight loss.
