Detox Diet
From LoveToKnow Diet
A detoxification diet is meant to rid the body of toxins. Toxins accumulate in several areas of the body, including glands, digestive tract and blood stream. Most detoxification plans center their intake recommendations on fruits, vegetables, juices and herbal teas.
Why Detox?
As toxins collect in our systems, the functions of these systems are negatively affected. The primary result is lack of energy. Mental concentration and clarity are often compromised as well. Therefore, feeling exhausted both physically and mentally is a likely sign that a detox diet may be right for you.
Certain physical attributes can be improved. Hair often becomes shinier, and skin tone is more radiant. People prone to acne often experience a reduction in the number and intensity of breakouts. Nails and cuticles appear healthier as well.
In general, overall health is rejuvenated due to the optimal functioning of your body. Rejuvenation and regeneration of cells enables the body and mind to operate at their highest level. In addition, since quality of sleep improves, a calm, energetic state of health is experienced for days after a detox diet is followed. This new state of well-being also means less susceptibility to illness and stress.
Detox Menu Plan
There are several programs available today. Some of these plans are extremely restrictive and long in duration. These types of plans often cause excessive diarrhea, fatigue, dehydration and headaches. Others, including the menu plan below, are as effective at detoxifying, but in a less severe manner. In addition, the time frame of 24 hours is doable for most people, hence producing a detoxified body without drastic repercussions to endure for several days.
Eliminating stimulants the day before you begin the regime will aid in the effectiveness of the results. Caffeine found in coffee, tea and chocolate should be avoided at least 24 hours prior to starting the plan. The avoidance of tobacco, alcohol, excessive sugar, dairy products and processed foods will also help with the detoxifying process.
Sample Menu Plan
Breakfast
Fresh fruit salad
½ papaya, seeded and sliced
1 banana, sliced
1 pear, sliced
½ c. strawberries or raspberries
6 grapes
6 tbs. unsweetened fruit juice
1 tsp. maple syrup (optional)
Mid-morning
1 c. nettle tea
Lunch
¼ melon
Fresh Fruit Salad
1 c. pineapple, chunked
1 banana, sliced
1 apple, sliced
1 pear, sliced
6 grapes
6 tbs. unsweetened fruit juice
Mid-afternoon
1 c. thyme tea
Dinner
½ papaya
1 mango
After-dinner
1 c. chamomile tea
Choosing organically grown fruit and tea highly recommended. Also, during the 24 hours of following the above meal plan, get sufficient rest, and keep your body warm. It is important to drink purified water throughout the day in small amounts. Doing gentle stretching, yoga positions and breathing exercises will assist the detoxification process as well.
After the 24-hour time period, eat wholesome, natural foods. Keep processed foods and stimulants out of your intake as long as possible, or at least for one week. Listen to your “new” body and choose foods with nutritious quality in mind.
Safety and Health Warning
If you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or taking any medications, do not engage in any type of detox diet. These programs should not be followed during menstruation or while trying to conceive. Always consult your physician before starting a diet plan. Detox diets are not meant for weight loss and should not be carried out for any long length of time.
