Controversy has surrounded low carb diets for years. Are they healthy or not?

Unlike a restrictive caloric diet, a low carb diet limits the number of carbohydrates you take in. This includes things like bread, grains, rice, starchy vegetables and fruit. Many of these same foods are limited on a lower calorie diet as well, but that's where the similarity ends, because low carb diets place importance on eating protein and fat.

Even amid the world of low carb diets, not everyone agrees on the types or the amounts of carbs to be taken in, however you'll find that the thing these low carb diets have in common is that they are followed to lose weight. It all started back in the mid-1800's when a man by the name of William Banting struggled to lose weight. When the scales tipped beyond the 200 mark, he went to see a doctor who took him off of bread, butter, milk, sugar, beer and potatoes. He lost almost one pound a week for a year, and published a book to share his success with others.

Today, a variety of low carb diets exist, each with varying restrictions on the types and amounts of carbohydrates you can eat. These diet plans include the Atkins Diet, Zone Diet, Southbeach Diet and more. The premise behind low carb diets is centered on how the body reacts to insulin. Carbs raise blood sugar levels, which initiates the release of insulin into the system. Insulin drives blood sugar into the cells, and stops the body from burning excess fat. The end result--it also stops you from losing weight.

A low carb diet is perfect for those meat and potato…well for meat eaters. Menus generally focus on: dairy products, eggs, fish, meat, poultry, and a handful of non-starchy vegetables. Complex carbohydrates are allowed in limited amounts.
