Blood Type Diet
From LoveToKnow Diet
The Blood Type Diet is based on the four human blood types: Type A, Type B, Type AB and Type O. Given your blood type, the program outlines one of four plans appropriate for you to follow in order to lose weight. The theory is the blood provides dynamic genetic information that determines what we should eat for achieving our ideal body weight.
Blood Type O
According to the program, the majority of the population in early civilization had Type O blood, and hunting and fishing were their primary methods of obtaining their next meal. Therefore, if you have type O blood today, you will lose weight by consuming meat and fish. Supposedly, these animal products are comfortably and efficiently broken down for Type O's due to their highly functioning digestive system.
Type O Favorable Foods
- Lean red meats
- Poultry
- Fish
- Shellfish
- Kelp
- Gluten-free products
- Liver
- Kale
- Spinach
- Broccoli
Type O Unfavorable Foods
- Grains
- Breads
- Legumes
- Beans
- Corn
- Cabbage
- Brussels Sprouts
- Cauliflower
- Mustard Greens
Blood Type A
The beginning of intense farming and agricultural methods is responsible for Type A's characteristics. According to the diet, if you have Type A blood, weight loss is increased by following a vegetarian diet. Plant foods are easily digested, and will provide satiety in adequate portions.
Type A Favorable Foods
- Soy products
- Vegetables
- Pineapple
- Vegetable oils
Type A Unfavorable Foods
- Meat
- Dairy products
- Kidney Beans
- Lima Beans
- Excessive amounts wheat products
Blood Type B
People with Type B blood are faced with a moderately ambiguous diet plan when adopting this plan. At the same time, the program offers B Types a “wide variety of foods”, which entails the blending together of Type A foods and Type O foods.
Type B Favorable Foods
- Green Vegetables
- Meat
- Liver
- Eggs
- Dairy Products
Type B Unfavorable Foods
- Corn
- Lentils
- Peanuts
- Sesame seeds
- Wheat
Blood Type AB
This particular type is unique in that it incorporates bits and pieces of Type A and Type B blood. Mainly, because people with Type AB reportedly have low stomach acid, they are unable to efficiently break down animal products. However, eating small amounts of meat is tolerated.
Type AB Favorable Foods
- Tofu
- Seafood
- Dairy
- Green Vegetables
Type AB Unfavorable Foods
- Red meat
- Kidney beans
- Lima beans
- Seeds
- Corn
- Wheat
Does It Work?
Although the scientific information holds merit for improved health status and the reduction of symptoms related to chronic conditions, such as heartburn and asthma, weight loss is likely the result of a calorie deficit.
The plan can be complicated and require a great deal of time, energy and attention. If you choose to try it, there are critical details outlined in the book, Eat Right for Your Type and Live Right for Your Type, both written by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo. Specific food lists, exercise plans, portion guidelines and menus are presented and thoroughly explained.
Is It Safe?
For the most part, the diet is safe, and promotes lowfat and wholesome food choices. However, any fad diet directing you to eliminate foods or food groups lacks the total nutrition required for optimum health. As with any diet programs, it is recommended that you seek the medical advice of your physician before making changes in your eating habits.

Hi bi,
Thanks for letting us know the diet worked for you. Sometimes that helps us make up our mind as to whether or not to try a diet.

-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladI have followed the blood type diet and I know that it works. I am type O and have found that other plans weren't doing much for me but reading the book explained a lot for me.
Yes, this one takes some effort but if you choose to try it you will see the difference.
If you think you will miss pasta or bread, there are substitutes like rice pasta and sprout bread that you can eat.
I didn't stick with it 100%, just due to eating out really is hard with this one, but I still had really good results with it.
Good luck to anyone who decides to choose this lifestyle!
