The AHA does not officially endorse the American Heart Association 3 Day Diet. In fact, the organization has posted an AHA recommendation that states that the plan is not associated with the organization.
American Heart Association 3 Day Diet
The 3-Day Diet is a very restrictive plan that significantly reduces the number of calories the dieter consumes. Some claim that it is possible to lose up to 10 pounds in 3 days, but it is important to keep in mind that the weight loss is not likely to be permanent. This approach is not endorsed nor recommended by the AMA at all.
Phony Diet Claims
The American Heart Association notes that the eating plan goes by other names, including the Heart Association Diet, and this is not the only phony eating plan that has been falsely associated with the organization. The three-day diet menu has been circulating as:
- Cleveland Clinic
- Miami Heart Institute
- Spokane Heart
- Sacred Heart
The official Cleveland Clinic website warns visitors that there is no such thing as the Cleveland Clinic Diet, and the organization strongly urges people to avoid the restrictive eating plan.
The Miami Heart Institute is part of the Mount Sinai Medical Center. There is no mention of any weight loss program posted on the organization's website. However, some sites not affiliated with the hospital claim that the 3-day diet is from the Miami Heart Institute.
Sacred Heart, like the AMA, appears to have a handful of bogus diets named after it. The frustrated organization has created an urgent message, encouraging people to avoid the Miracle Soup Diet that claims to be affiliated with the hospital.
Dieting Dangers
The AMA points out that the eating plan is not recommended because it includes poor food choices. The American Heart Association advises against many of the foods on the plan's list.
AMA recommends:
- Limiting dairy
- Egg yolks
- Whole milk
- Ice cream
- Cheese
- Limiting processed meats
- Hot dogs
Ironically, the very foods that the organization warns against are integral to the unhealthy fad diet.
The Real Plan
The real AMA diet does not endorse rapid weight loss. The organization focuses on variety and balances as well as smart choices. There is no such thing as the American Heart Association 3 Day Diet because the real eating plan is one that is appropriate as a permanent lifestyle change. The organization urges dieters to avoid fad diets that make unreasonable claims.

The AMA has created an excellent book called the No-Fad Diet that promotes a no-fad planning, eating, and exercising plan. The book assists dieters as they take realistic steps toward their ultimate weight loss goals. The approach serves as a guideline rather than a strict eating plan.
Unlike the three-day rapid weight loss plan, the no-fad strategy offers support for healthy lifestyle changes. The organization does not present a cookie-cutter approach to weight loss. It focuses on encouraging people to create their own plans according to their unique personalities.
