This 3-day diet was supposedly implemented at the Birmingham, Alabama Hospital Cardiac Unit as a tool to help patients lose weight quickly before surgery. This cardiac diet plan is also known as:

Another Fad Diet
Those who follow this 3-day diet are promised a weight loss of up to 10 pounds in just three days. This may be a true claim, but realistically most of the weight loss can be attributed to fluid loss instead of the long-term loss of body fat that people really desire. On top this fact, healthy exercise is not mentioned as part of this weight loss plan.
You've heard the old adage, "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is." It's no different when it comes to the Alabama version of the 3 Day Diet. Although this diet has been around since the mid 1980s and continues to show up as a reliable way to lose weight fast, this diet's promises are unsubstantiated. There's no explanation as to how it supposedly creates the unique metabolic reaction that makes people shed those unwanted pounds. As a result, people desperate to lose weight fast turn to the diet in hopes that these unconfirmed promises will work for them. These promises include things like:
- cleansing
- increased energy
- lower cholesterol
- quick weight loss
According to the limited information available, this regimented plan has to be followed precisely for three-day intervals if you want to see results. Between the three days of strict dieting, you are allowed to eat normally for four-five days, and then if you want to lose more weight you can follow the diet for another three days.
What To Eat on the 3 Day Diet
The Alabama 3 Day Diet is a desirable plan for people who don't want to think about what to make for their meals. It is a very specific menu that must be followed exactly if you want to see the promised results. This includes specified portions. Anything more than that is considered overeating and dieters are warned they will not see the 10-pound weight loss. However, this diet also stresses the importance of not under-eating. If you decide to follow this 3-day plan, you must eat the recommended portions even when you don't have an appetite.
Day One
Breakfast
- 1/2 Grapefuit or Juice
- 1 Slice of Toast
- 1 tbsp. Peanut Butter
- Black Coffee or Tea
Lunch
- 1/2 cup Tuna
- 1 Slice Toast

Dinner
- 2 Slices (3 oz.) of any Meat
- 1 cup String Beans
- 1 cup Carrots or Beets
- 1 small Apple

- 1 Slice of Toast
- 1/2 Banana
- Black Coffee or Tea
Lunch
- 1 cup Cottage Cheese

- 5 Saltine Crackers
Dinner
- 2 Wieners
- 1 cup Cabbage or Broccoli
- 1/2 cup Carrots
Or
- Turnip Greens
- 1/2 Banana
- 1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream
Day Three
Breakfast
- 1 hard-boiled Egg
- 1 Slice Toast
- Black Coffee or Tea
Lunch
- 1 Slice Cheddar Cheese
- 5 Saltine Crackers
- 1 small Apple
- Black Coffee or Tea
Dinner
- 1 cup Tuna
- 1 cup Carrots or Beets
- 1 cup Green Beans
Or
- Cauliflower
- 1 cup Cantaloupe
Or
- 1 small Apple
- 1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream
Guidelines
The guidelines for this diet are straight-forward and uncomplicated. Claims made regarding results for this diet state that it works because it initiates a chemical breakdown that's "proven to work" as long as these guidelines are strictly followed. No substitutions other than those specified are allowed. Along with the above menu, you are allowed the following:
- Diet soda or tea sweetened with an artificial sweetener
- Salt and pepper (no other seasoning)
- Stick to this diet for 3 consecutive days each week.
- After 3 days eat usual food, but be sure not to over eat.
- After 4 days of normal eating, start back on the Alabama 3 Day Diet.

The best way to lose weight is slow and steady. If you cut your caloric intake and exercise, you will lose weight. I don't know how tall you are or your bone structure, but these links can give you more information to help you decide what is best for you.
