I’m wondering if anyone has experience with diets or foods and thyroid issues? For instance, I have seen some reports that Splenda may not be good for people with thyroid issues, and some conflicting evidence of the pros and cons of including sea vegetables. Anyone have any experience with this? Ideas to share? |

Hi Jeanne, I haven’t heard about a connection with Splenda, but I steer clear of it since it causes my daughter intestinal distress. However, some sea vegetation like seaweed provides sources of iodine and would make a nice addition to a diet for someone with a thyroid condition. The thyroid diet in general recommends lean proteins and avoidance of high-glycemic foods. Along with this, including whole foods for fiber is also recommended. I’ll be interested to see if anyone else has heard of a connection with Spelnda. Good question. Donna |

Hi Donna - that’s funny, I get intestinal distress and very sick from aspartame. I guess we are all different! I think the sea vegetable recommended is excellent. They are yummy, even if most people get kind of freaked out thinking about eating seaweed (they put seaweed derivatives in ice cream, I think, and that doesn’t stop most folks!). |

Have you tried Truvia? It is an all natural sweetener that’s all the buzz right now among the health-conscious. I haven’t tried it yet, and I’m wondering if anyone here as tasted it. It doesn’t have any of the chemicals or after taste of the artificial sweeteners, and am thinking it could be a viable options for those looking for a healthy alternative. |

I had a pretty good case of intestinal distress after drinking Ice Tea ( the powder you mix) I looked it up and couldn’t find anything - now I think it’s the sugar. People with thyroid disorders can be hyper sensitive to high glycemic foods. [ Edited: 12 July 2009 11:52 AM by ThyroidFoods]

I didn’t realize that. Do any other high glycemic food bother you? Donna |

I usually have headaches when I eat bread alone for example, with nothing else. The post about Splenda and intestinal distress made me smile, it reminded me of my Ice Tea incident, lol I Googled every ingredient in my Ice Tea and never related it to the sugar. Now I think it was the sugar !! |

It is amazing how easily we dismiss symptoms or don’t tie them to the real cause. That’s because not all foods affect people the same way, so it is easy to overlook. For example I can eat Splenda and my daughter can’t, without adverse symptoms. However, because of that, I avoid it. Donna |
