The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says a safe rate of weight loss is one to two pounds per week. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases notes that very low-calorie diets containing just 800 calories daily help you drop three to five pounds weekly, but should be medically supervised.
