True stories of attempts at weight loss and healthy living from a couple of diet veterans.

My husband is returning tomorrow after three months away. Looking in the mirror, I feel disappointed. In these three months, I've started three water fasts. And I've failed at three water fasts. Just think, if I had stuck to any of those fasts, I could have transformed myself. I could have easily lost 25 pounds and started on a healthier way of eating.

And then a strange thought struck me: if I had done any diet, even a very sensible eating plan, I could have lost 25 pounds. If I had lost a moderate 2 pounds a week, I could have reached that goal! Instead, I'm always looking for the quick fix, and the quick fixes always fail me.

Tonight, I was watching the Biggest Loser, thinking about how hard the contestants have to work for their weight loss. Admittedly, those folks drop weight at superhuman rates that just don't work in the real world. Still, the methods behind it-- hard work, exercise, and healthy eating-- would work in the real world. They're losing 6 to 15 pounds in a week; I could lose that in a month. They workout for several hours a day; I could workout out a few hours a week. They have teammates and personal trainers supervising their eating; I could enlist the help of a buddy. Sure, it would take me a little longer to reach my goal, but I could reach it.

So, now I have a decision to make: do I continue trying to do water fasts and then falling hard off the wagon? Or do I embark on a lifestyle changing program, losing weight slowly but steadily? The time is going to pass either way, but where do I want to be in three months? Where will you be in three months?
