True stories of attempts at weight loss and healthy living from a couple of diet veterans.

Diet Decision Time

by Misty K on September 24, 2009

Since last week, I've been going back and forth. Do I shoot for rapid weight loss through water fasting or do I commit to a long-term program of exercise and diet? For a normal person, it's probably a no-brainer; the healthiest way to lose weight is to move more and eat healthier. For me, it wasn't that easy!

Although logic and reason tell me there's no easy, quick way to lose weight and keep it off, there's still a part of me that's attracted to the extremes of water fasting. I like the very cut-and-dried aspect of it. If it isn't water, you don't eat it or drink it. Period. There's no thinking involved, no counting of calories, no making decisions. And that's likely the problem. I stop eating for a period and I lose weight, but what happens when the fast is over? Since I haven't really learned what and how much to eat, I go right back to making horrible choices. Inevitably, the weight comes back and then I'm mad at myself for failing. It's truly a vicious cycle.

I really need to take the time to learn to make healthy choices. I need to earn my weight loss through time and hard work so that I'll be more inclined to keep it off. So, I've made the adult decision: I'm embarking on a diet and exercise program. I'll be working out with Slim in 6 from Beachbody. Because I'm prone to hypoglycemia and I really don't seem to process carbs well, I'm going to limit carbs. I'll still be eating plenty of vegetables, but I'm cutting out white flour, white rice, and sweets.

I'll keep you posted with my progress. Wish me luck!
