Salt Craving

by Donna S. on November 06, 2009

If you experience salt cravings regularly, it is best to let your doctor know so you can be tested. Craving salt is also a symptom associated with chronic conditions like diabetes, Addison's Disease and high blood pressure. Just because you crave salt, though, doesn't mean that you have one of these serious conditions. It could just be that you are used to eating a lot of salt, enjoy it, and want more. Many times this craving is also linked to eating carbs.

Another cause of salt cravings is adrenal exhaustion and stress. If stress and adrenal exhaustion are the cause of your cravings, you can help combat them by eating foods high in vitamin C and potassium:

  • Apricots (Potassium)
  • Baked potato with skin (Potassium)
  • Broccoli (Vitamin C)
  • Citrus (Vitamin C)
  • Figs (Potassium)
  • Peppers (Vitamin C)
  • Raisins (Potassium)
  • Wheat Bran (Potassium)

Don't shrug off salt cravings. While they may be the result of a matter of taste, this craving may also be a symptom of an underlying medical condition. If you've just recently starting craving salty foods, or if your cravings have intensified, it is best to talk with your personal health care professional to clarify why you are craving salt. If you're taking in high amounts of sodium daily, it's not healthy. Consider transitioning to a low sodium diet and your cravings may diminish.
