Not All About Weight

by Donna S. on March 26, 2009

Thursday is the day I weigh in. Last week I lost three pounds and 12 inches. I was thankful then that I had taken the time to measure myself because while three pounds is great for one week, others in my weight loss group had lost more. It's easy to get discouraged when you compare your results with others. But no one else had measured themselves and the 12-inch loss really bolstered my resolve to stick with it.

This morning, I stepped on the scale with anticipation. What would it tell me? I waited for the digital numbers to appear and…I gained 0.4 pounds! I stepped off the scale waited and stepped back on as if it would tell me something different. Nope. I had gained almost a half pound! In the past that would be enough to send me to the kitchen to start a feeding frenzy, but not this time. I reached for the tape measure hoping it would tell me a different story. Not that I expected to see much of a difference after the initial 12 inches. That was so awesome.

I'm an apple body type and gain the most around the middle. To my surprise, I've lost another inch around my waist. That makes four inches off my waist in two weeks. Who could ask for more? But there was more. I lost a total of four and three-fourths inches this past week. So while the scale told me I'd lost ground, the tape measure told me that I'm on the right track. In two weeks, I've lost 16 ¾ inches. Don't rest all your hopes on what the scale says. Weight fluctuates for a variety of reasons. Lifestyle weight loss isn't all about what the scale has to say.
