Low Carb High Protein Diet

by Donna S. on October 28, 2009

While being overweight is not healthy, being thin does not necessarily mean health either. Our bodies need proper nutrients to function optimally and this is why low carb high protein diets often come under fire. The benefit of a low carb diet is that it strips your diet of refined carbs such as:

  • Jams and jellies
  • Most crackers
  • Sweets
  • Tonic
  • White bread
  • White pasta
  • White rice

The benefit of restricting these kinds of carbs is of course weight loss, but when you cut these kinds of carbs fro your diet your blood sugar and insulin levels can be better maintained and triglyceride levels reduced. It's more than about weight...it's about health.

The problem with diets that restrict all carbohydrates including the healthy complex carbs found in vegetables, fruit, and whole grains is that they are not balanced. Our bodies need these nutrients in moderation. When we strip our diet of all carbs it's like throwing the baby out with the bath water. Not all carbs are bad. So when choosing a diet keep that in mind.

The same holds true for the protein aspect of a high protein low carb diet. How much protein you need will depend on your individual physical needs including things like how old you are and how active you are. Too much protein can lead to potential side effects. Talk with your doctor about any diet you're considering and use common sense. Over and over we read that our bodies need fruits, vegetables and whole grains. If a diet tells you to eliminate them, I'd cross it off the list of potential diet plans.
