How to Stop Sugar Cravings

by Donna S. on November 04, 2009

In yesterday's blog we looked at how a low-fat diet can contribute to insulin resistance which in turn can send a message to our brain that we want more carbs. The problem is, that if you are trying to lose weight and get into this cycle of eating carbs throughout the day to satisfy your cravings, you not only won't lose weight, if you're like me you'll feel like a weak and hopeless dieter doomed to never fit back into your skinny jeans. When I feel like that my carb feeding cycle worsens!

That doesn't have to be the case. Here are a few basic steps to help stop those sugar cravings:

  • Eat healthy foods and include more protein in your diet
  • Don't skip meals
  • Moderate exercise

Heard this somewhere before? Have healthy snacks on hand. The more you feed your body the right stuff, the less it will crave the refined sugars. Including protein in your meal can actually keep you satisfied between meals, but you don't have to give up all sugar to get your metabolism back where it needs to be. However it needs to be a treat not a staple of your diet. That means once-in-awhile, not three times a day (or more). If you crave chocolate, buy yourself a bar of dark chocolate and have a little once a day. However, if you know you're likely to eat the whole bar if you take one bite, don't even buy it.

Fruit can help satisfy a sweet tooth, but the carbs provided by the sugar in fruit can also prevent you from losing weight if you overdo it. While fruit is a healthy option, it still needs to be eaten in moderation. Just because a food is healthy does mean it gives us license to overeat. Think not only about what you're eating but why. Are you really hungry?
