How to Spot a Fad Diet

by Donna S. on January 20, 2009

Instead of falling for the hype surrounding the latest fad diet, the answer is to look for a real "lifestyle" change. This term is thrown around a lot in the diet world, but it really is one of the keys to successful weight loss. It's more than being on a diet. It's about changing your thinking, which then changes your eating habits. On the other side of this healthy approach are fad diets. Here's how you can spot them:

  • Makes miraculous promises for quick, extreme weight loss (more than two pounds a week)
  • Restricts calorie intake below what is needed for optimal health
  • Requires the purchase of particular products or supplements
  • Doesn't suggest that you should talk to your health care provider or nutritional specialist before starting the diet
  • Promotes the elimination of entire food groups or a restricted selection of food items
  • Promises you can lose weight without exercise
  • Goes against advice given by most health professions
  • Depends on statements from individuals who have tried the diet instead of scientific proof
