How to Count Carbs

by Donna S. on October 26, 2009

Food labels tell you how many calories and carbs are in a serving. However, when that container holds more than one serving it will require measuring or weighing to calculate how many carbs you'll be eating. For efficiency, a food scale is a must-have tool that makes measuring carbs as convenient as possible. It's the best way to measure a piece of fruit or a scoop from your favorite casserole. I have a digital scale I bought at Wal-Mart for a reasonable price, and it provides weights in ounces or grams. Once you have your scale, learning to count carbs will be fairly easy.

When first learning how to count carbs the easiest way to get started is to use a resource such as a book that lists carbs in various foods. If you have access to a computer an online calculator makes it easier to follow a low carb diet plan because it does the actual calculation for you.

As you learn more about carbs, you'll also learn that not all carbs are equal. Unhealthy foods high in carbs will be greatly reduced or eliminated from your diet. This includes things like:

  • Candy
  • Chips
  • Cookies
  • Pastries
  • Sugary snacks
  • Most processed foods
  • Most packaged snack foods

How many carbs you should eat depends on your size Just like bigger people need more calories to function, the same holds true for carbohydrates. The Dietary Guideline for Americans recommends that about half of our daily calories comes from carbohydrates, so the more calories we require, the higher the number of carbs we need. It is best to talk over your individual needs with your doctor before you start a diet, whether you plan to count carbs or calories it's important to keep our diets healthy.
