Diet Motivation

by Donna S. on January 21, 2009

Dieting is not always fun or easy, but if you stick to it, a healthy diet can be rewarding. To bolster your motivation, write down why you started your diet. While the majority of people diet to lose weight, there are plenty of other reasons people decide to go on a diet. Those reasons work as triggers to motivate your dieting efforts. Whether you want to lose weight or lower your cholesterol, write down your reasons for dieting and post them on the refrigerator. Then when dieting gets tough and your emotions work against your best intentions, you head to the refrigerator to scout for comfort food and you'll see that list.

Other Triggers to Stay Motivated:

  • Post a goal photo. This photo can be of you at a time when you weighed less, or can be a picture of someone else that has the look you want to attain.

  • Make a menu. Often you start the day motivated, but the stresses of life throw you into a downward spiral. To help stay on track, create a menu for the day that is complete with snacks. Don't eat anything until you look at your menu plan. It serves as a reminder that you have plenty of choices to help you achieve your goal.

  • Sign up to receive a fitness tip each day. Sites like Lifestrong.com provide a Fitness Tip of the day.

  • Find a diet buddy, someone with similar goals, and make a pact to call each other a couple of times a day to discuss your successes, temptations and creative ideas for how to stay on your diet. If you live near each other, it can be fun to walk together, too, to stay motivated.
