140 Pounds Lost and Still Losing

by Donna S. on July 26, 2009

Captain Miles is on the road to better health and now 140 pounds lighter and still losing. As a member of the 21 Day Challenge, his participation inspires others, but he says it also helps him stay on track. He recently took a moment to share insights into his weight loss journey.
What motivated you to lose weight?
Not being able to get down on the floor or go outside and play with my daughter without being out of breath was a horrible feeling and not fair to her. Secondly, heart disease runs in my family; my three uncles, my grandfather and my dad have all had heart attacks. I had to do something, my daughter is two years old and the thought of me not being around for her as she grows older was not acceptable.

You've lost more than 100 pounds and are still losing, how did you do it?
So far, I've lost 140 pounds; I started out weighing 425 pounds. I've stuck to a low-fat, 1200 calorie a day diet. I eat a healthy protein-rich breakfast, a banana as a snack every day, as many green vegetables as possible, drink lots of water (around 120 ounces), take a multi-vitamin and flax seed oil, and I work out six days a week, no exceptions! I either go for a vigorous five mile walk or I get on my treadmill and do an hour long work out. Sundays are my "rest" day; this is also when I have my "cheat" meal. For that one meal I have whatever I want, whatever I've been craving the most all week. For me the cheat meal is an integral part of my weight loss plan. It's a way to reward myself for the hard work of the past week; and it helps me stay focused.

Do you have any advice to share?
The only advice I can give is: First, there are no magic pills, nor magic drinks, nor magic diets. It takes will power, commitment and hard work to loose the weight and get healthy. There is no quick fix, period. Secondly, keep things simple. It comes down to limiting your calorie intake, eating healthy foods and exercising. The only other thing I would add would be, to talk on the forums and share your successes and failures. With support from other people, it makes things easier.
